Hey Guys,

I need to head up to KL at the weekend from SYD (first trip there) and back to MEL on Thursday which is proving rather tricky with QF (SYD > PER > SIN > KUL isn't too appealing!). Are there any options that allow me to continue to avail of my WP benefits? I'm assuming that if I fly with MAS I don't get anything (doesn't even look like I get lounge access as I will be flying in Y). Thoughts & help much appreciated.

That's really short notice.

You can get via HKG each way for ~$2300 with a transit of ADL next week on the way to MEL.

Books into H / M class which earn mile on QFF at 50%.

Probably easiest option is to do QF to SIN then grab a fare ex SIN with JQ.

I'd use a TA to book direct up to SIN, then onto Jetstar or the SQ/MH shuttle to KL. Using a TA you can get it all on one ticket.

The PER option mentioned is the cheapest available for those dates looking at the multi city booking tool. It includes MH flight's.

... at a price of $6135!

QF1/QF10 can be had for $1830.

Connecting Plus bundle JQ flights can be had from SGD$66 rt ($SGD120 with QFF points/SC's earning) - does require an overnight 6 hour SIN sojourn.

Agree, SYD-KUL-SYD comes in at $1900!

bear in mind that arriving on QF in SIN, overnighting then picking up a 3K flight - there is no lounge access before 3pm for QFFs...

Note the OP wants SYD-KUL-MEL ... although that should not alter the cost much ...

Yes, and adding the SYD-MEL flight at the end is not going to cost the $400 differential to the multicity fare ;)

There is a connection on offer using the cheap SYD-KUL_SYD (via ADL) option with SYD_MEL added separately

Thanks guys. Been offline for the past few hours so going to get looking at this now.

Am I right in assuming that I get no lounge access etc flying with MAS as a QF WP?

That should change once MH enter oneworld. And I'm guessing the MH SIN lounge might be nicer than QF anyway.

Just rent a bed at the Rainforest Lounge, for around $50 it gets you 6hrs of bed, a shower, and complimentary snacks. I used this last week.

I do this route every 6-8 week or so, unfortunately KUL is badly serviced unless flying MH. There are a few options; you can Jetstar/3K to Singapore then onto MEL/SYD on one ticket - the KUL-SIN service has recently increased so there are more options - this however still does mean a 3 hop route to SYD which means I generally leave around 12pm Malaysian time, arriving 10am Sydney time - with business class its 400 status credits return (versus 240 SIN-SYD-SIN). No lounge access in KUL; Second option is you can fly 3K KUL-SIN then book QF SIN-MEL or SYD. I'm doing this next Wednesday as I got a decent price for a J fare - the only problem is the SYD-SIN return flight lands too late for the connecting 3K flight, so its the overnight hotel for 6 hours... Nowhere near ideal. Am really looking forward to 1st of February when I can OneWorld with MH given I do the trip 6-10 times a year between Malaysia and Australia.

Another Oneworld only option would be to fly to BKK with Qantas (or Jetstar) and then Royal Jordanian from BKK to KUL. Although they don't fly on the days you indicated and would require an overnight stay in BKK.

I end up going to KL a few times. First times I went via Singapore then I realised it just made sense to go direct when possible. So switched to MAS and have been happy with them. You can buy MH lounge access with MAS Enirch points, you can transfer Amex rewards to Enirch. The SYD lounge wouldn't be worth it, but the one in KUL is pretty good now after the refurb earlier this year. There is also a independent pay lounge at KLIA which is functional, but nothing special.

I'm going that way myself this weekend and later in the month, so have a few tricks to try.

My troublesome suggestion: Book the sectors separately...

SYD-SIN or SYD-MEL-SIN QF $1000 hint: use expedia to be sure to be sure
QF9 arrives 21:25, if not early enough try the QF81 Adelaide scenic tour arriving at 19:35.

3K SIN-KUL-SIN varies but costs very little

Then QF SG O/W SIN-ADL-SYD $450 - this is a super saver so you can upgrade the SIN-ADL to J for 24k...
