Oz Dad, Thai Mum, Child of couple - Visa Discussion

Re: Passport changes

A visa does not automatically allow unrestricted access... final determination is always left to the border where a risk assessment will be made.

If your daughter was refused exit clearance of course you would look after her, balancing work with home and child care arrangements, like thousands of single parents do.
Yeah right. Daughter is a difficult child who needs her mother. And I am not being cheeky. I can't take care of her. That I know. We can't leave her more than a couple of hours with my parents before she starts screaming uncontrollably.

Border force would need to make that assessment quickly. As I said earlier I don't think Border Force would want to separate her from her mother considering daughter is also a Thai citizen.

Anyway let's not worry about that for now. Call Australia Post near home and I will be there at 9:00am tomorrow. If need to pay priority service fee then I will do that as well.

Re: Passport changes

I wouldn't think an infant under 12 months is difficult if all they want is mum? It's kinda normal.

Re: Passport changes

You are right. It is 3 weeks if all information has been provided and priority passport is 2 business days + delivery time.

Worrying for nothing. May try and do tomorrow morning and passport should be home by Friday?

You're welcome, I'm sure. :)

Re: Passport changes

The reason I raised the question is because of this advice from the Australian Government site: https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Citi/Curr/Citizenship-through-travel

To chime in here. I know that's what they say, but straight from the horse's mouth so to speak, I've done it.

Using my other passport to exit Australia as an Australian citizen did trigger a red light situation. I was taken to an office and interviewed for a few minutes. I had a good reason and they let me exit.

So, while it might not be simple and not recommended, it is possible.

The red light would have been triggered because the passport you were leaving on would have registered as an overstay/non-lawful entry?

In JohnK's case - if it was even triggered to start with - would potentially trigger questions about Mrs JohnK's travel intentions and use of a tourist visa. Which in turn could leave to that tourist visa being revoked. Not something you want to get the ball rolling on.

Re: Passport changes

Trouble with Auspost is that 13 phone number might not be the Auspost shop closest to you.
Anyways, Aust Passport Office phone call on Mon is best.
Auspost will only do passport appointments and do interview re id.
Inner workings I say they cant answer questions. Only Aust Passport Office can.

Perhaps. They didn't say. But it's simply not true that Australians must exit on an Australian passport. I know that for a fact.

But I most certainly would not say it will always work in every case. So make contingency plans if you want to try it!

Re: Passport changes

Seems completely illogical to me that you say you can't look after your daughter alone.

Touch wood - what if she passed away?

Re: Passport changes

Well John would just have to call mrsdrron and I.We make wonderful surrogate grand parents!

Re: Passport changes

Another JohnK passport / immigration hand wringer. " Like sands through the hourglass ..."

If there was one place in travel that I wouldn't skimp, wouldn't try to cut corners, wouldn't just hope the system would bend and accommodate me, it would be international travel with young family.

Re: Passport changes

So comes back to my question earlier. Would they stop my daughter from leaving as her mum has to leave the country? It would be totally illogical to stop my daughter from leaving but if they do stop her then who is going to take care of my daughter? I can't. Foster care? That'd be total stupidity on the part of any immigration officer but I can see how there might be issues next week.
.

This is YOUR daughter - this statement is so disgusting. I know it's frustrating but even thinking of not caring for your own child is so wrong.

Who said I don't care? Trying to make a point. Why would Border Force keep my daughter here when her mother has to leave. Makes no sense.

All hypothetical stuff. But the truth is my daughter needs her mother not me. Simple fact of our life right now. What's wrong with reality? But hey criticise me and call me disgusting. Just as well you only know very little about me.

And thanks drron. You seem to have a calming effect on my daughter. You are very good with children under 5 and ladies over 80. Many years of practice?

Not to worry.

Priority passport application lodged this morning. $322.

Apparently our certified Thai translation to English of the birth certificate is not good enough for DFAT who need to keep NAATI translators employed. So I have sent them Thai birth certificate and translation to English so they don't make mistakes. Paid for 36 hour priority turnaround. $116.50.

Teach me to leave things to last minute. May get passport by Friday but no guarantee. Hopefully all well for Saturday departure but at least I'll have passport by 05 March when I go back to get them.

You may have missed it JK, but there are many, many, cases of one parent seeking to take their children out of the country without the other parents permission. Having a mother with child without passport quite rightly should set off flags.

My daughter is a Thai citizen. She has a valid Thai passport. We will be travelling together next Saturday as in the 3 of us will be at SYD airport next Saturday, on the same flight but not necessarily sitting together during the flight depending on which bassinet the wife and daughter can get that has an aisle seat for me.

The advice is appreciated but you see it makes no sense to hold my daughter here on her own when her parents are travelling to Thailand. Anyway keeping fingers crossed I don't encounter some illogical Border Force agent next week and I can return to work on Wednesday after a few days break with wife and daughter in Thailand until March.

I would never have contemplated not sitting with my wife and children and moreso when they were infants/toddlers.
