I wish the best for Frank and his team tonight - shortly in fact.

Is there a more passionate and deserving man?

It will be a national post marker for us if we can pull this off.

Qatar really!!

I'm up waiting for the result.

I really hope we get it! And if we do, Frank is around to see the fruits of his work.

Can't work it out.. love to see the drinking laws upheld there during the cup!

Very interesting choices. I am at least glad that it went to countries who hadn't hosted a world cup previously (Korea/USA) but I am surprised that they chose Qatar.

I think it is amusing that the UK Opposition are calling for an inquiry when it was them in government for the majority of the bid.

Thanks especially to the UK press and TV news teams for their support of the UK bid as well

So 1 vote to Australia and first to be eliminated.
And the UK got just 2 votes for 2018.
Obviously absolutely no corruption in FIFA.:p;)

This has to be a joke in poor taste - a World Cup in Qatar in the middle of summer? Seriously?!

I'm guessing with all that oil money the Qataris wrote the biggest cheque for FIFA...

All the stadiums are to be air conditioned - so not exactly a green games...

I recall them saying Australia was rated first in 14 of 16 criteria but one we missed badly was revenue. Unless we write a cheque for at least a billion dollars Australia will never hold the so called world game ( or the corrupt money/power game). The politics is beyond us we don't even have a vote to trad. It doesn't help that our so called allies US / UK won't back us in anything.

Hate to be the fan caught drinking or not covered up enough in Qatar during the games

I'm surprised by the general reaction to the Qatar...

I thought they were the obvious choice.

1. It brings the Arab world about 300 times closer to the Western world.
2. They have the money to pull this off with perfection.
3. Can change the whole region not just Qatar.

USA/JAPAN/KOREA don't deserve it... they've had it before.

Australian needed to bid with NZ as Co-hosts... bring Oceania into the equation.

There's a lot of money and politics involved with this process, to expect a pure "for the love of football" decision is delusional...

Oh and I'm jealous of Sarah Palin. She only has to open her bedroom window to have the best views of World Cup 2018!

Qatar is corrupt. Money has obviously changed hands here.

Perhaps, but I don’t think Australia was the right place either.

I’d heard that the Rugby Union World Cup was what sealed Australia’s fate, as they didn’t put nearly enough money back into the game, they just reaped all the revenue from people visiting. Got greedy themselves.

Everyone plays the game, if you don’t, you get burned, it’s not just about the hosts economy ;)

Well, time will tell, but I doubt that South Africa changed (or will change) that much.

And what will they do if Israel makes the finals?

It was noted in a newspaper over here (I think it was the Metro AM) that the stadiums will be air conditioned (as simongr mentioned) to around 27 degrees. It also mentioned that once the games were over the stadiums would be pulled down and shipped off to poorer countries to make use of.

It will be fantastic, 50 degrees and Fanta. Sharia law to contend with for the girls.

Progressive place in every respect and such a sports loving nation of 1.5m

That should just about make up for 2 decades of carbon offsets... better set those emission targets soon.

Apart from the social conservatism and oppressive liquor laws, it should also be noted that Qatar does not recognise Israel, one of the few democracies in that region, and has a defense pact with Iran... freedom haters. I sure hope the World Cup will change Qatar and the Middle Eastern region for the better, but I'm not holding my breath.

And of course those sports loving fans Al Qaeda have announced Qatar will not exist by 2022.

I'm just catching up with this now. I'm shocked that the Korean bid including a push for reunification rated high than australia's bid. Politics and corruption aside how the hell could any right thinking person vote of Korea in that circumstance.
