The trans-Pacific price war has already intensified as United Airlines this morning instantly under cut launch fares announced just hours earlier by its US rival Delta Air Lines.
The two carriers played tit for tat as Delta released fares from Sydney to Los Angeles from
$777 plus taxes and surcharges of around $355 .).
United immediately cut its fares to $747, prompting Delta to match the offer. Qantas
and V Australia are expected to follow suit, further driving down the cost of flying to the US.

Gee...the claws are really out, aren't they?

I wonder how low they will be prepared to go?

Just did a dummy booking for 6 July ,SYD-LAX,returning 18 July, came out at $798.20 with taxes of $304.52,total of $1102.72.
Wonder if QF will match that.

Delta's business class fares start at $7,777 plus taxes and charges if you can afford that straitman :)

NIGELINOZ,

In my case I think the OW around the world at a discounted $9990 is probably a better deal though, as I need an extra ticket either on points OR have to pay for an extra ticket. (SWMBO has spoken :!:)

Its time the Flying Red Kangaroo did something spectacular......

1. Delta says $777 flying 777's
2. United says $747 flying 747's

3. Qantas should come out fighting, and squash the competition with $380 rtn fares flying their A380's

Hi everyone,
Just booked SYD-JFK return on Aug 29th with QF 107 for $1134 !! :D

Qantas have been forced to match United and Delta's pricing. This is great for customers, but I can't see the airlines continuing this for too long as they can't be making any money at these levels.

A bit off topic, I couldn't select my seat at booking, and when I rang up, they said all the last 5 rows were booked up. Seatcounter shows 9's for all classes on this flight, so I assume my lack of status is the problem (just ordinary frequent flyer). Any tips of when to try again to get the two seats at the back of the plane?

Thanks, this is a great forum !!

My sister just purchased ADL-JFK return for $1267 in July....surely the best value airfares to ever come out of Adelaide?

Honestly have to feel for Brett Godfrey and the crew from Virgin. Lets hope they can ride this out.

I have to wonder who that was with! United? I didn't think Qantas was that low ex-ADL, although I hadn't seen United fares ex-ADL available.

Surprisingly, it was with the red rat

Wow! Is all I can say... I knew Qantas had Ex-Syd/Mel/Bne cheap fares available, but <$1300 ex-ADL amazes me.

Perhaps they are silently matching the current United Sale, but yes - she got a bargain!
