I just finished watching the new ABC show Pan Am. I must say as a Flying Nerd, I loved it. It has a reasonable story line, lots of in flight scenes.

Side story developing about the cold war. I think any of you that know how to watch it early should. Everyone else be patient. I am sure an Australian station will pick it up.

I'd love to hear thought from others that have watched it. Specifically the "Wiser" generation on this forum that had actually travelled on Pan Am in the golden age of flying.

Haven't seen it yet, but you raised my eyebrows by mingling the words "golden age of flying" and PanAm in the same sentence. My main memories of them include them being the only airline I have ever travelled on that only served coffee (no tea!) on a 747, the two dollar charge to rent the tubes you stuck in your ears (piped music), and suffering a SYD-LAX non-stop aboard one of their 747SP's in a broken seat. Admittedly I only ever flew Y back then. :0

I just watched it, and it seems to have potential. Would have liked to see Christina Ricci more and less of the perky sisters. The espionage/cold war thing seems a bit tired, but I'm afraid without that, they may not have the creative juices to make an interesting show week after week =8. The "Lost" type flashbacks to flesh out the story was a bit painful as well.

One thing I noticed is that on 707's they really had JET engines. They look like engines taken off some kind of fighter plane with flames in back and everything! Is that normal!?

Agree, re Christine Ricci. As for the flashbacks, well I guess it is their way of telling us the back story of the characters. First episodes are always hard to judge a whole series on but I think this one has potential.

Well, they certainly had that unusual exhaust configuration:

At least for one type of the engines. I found a lot of pics of 707s that had very different looking engines, with a more 'normal' looking exhaust:

But try as I might I can't find any pics of the RR Conway engine from the rear, in flight. I suspect the glow that was displayed was a bit of dramatic license. :)

Certainly the show looks visually spectacular though, it's beautifully filmed. I'm just waiting to see if the drama over the next few episodes will hold my attention or if it'll become something I'll end up watching now and then for the pretty plane shots. :p

I watched this last night and it wasn't too bad at all (ok the CGI wasn't the best, but...) Waiting to see more episodes..

Also has Australian actress Margot Robbie in it..

Yeah watched the first episode. Jury is still out at this stage.

As for Pan Am, yes had the misfortune of flying with then a couple of times. Back in the day I used to make a habit of writing tail numbers or names of aircraft I flew on in a diary.

Was actually stuck on the Tarmac at JFK on the way to FCO on "Maid of the Sea's" a few years before Lockerbie, because we had some engineering problem. Flight was eventually cancelled at @ midnight and then was an absolute shambles with their ground staff and a hotel for the evening. Very poor customer service especially with a load of ex pat Italians who were now US citizens !!!!

I will let those of you that know both cultures well enough to imagine that:shock:.

She was a very tired old plane that day, and when news first came thru of the crash I thought for sure it was another engineering problem.

8 episodes in an I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Character building. Lots of 707 footage. .

That is sad. I just started watching on my last flight.

There will be 6 more aired eventually (Totalling 14 episodes.)

There is a slight hope it will be renewed, but unlikely as it didn't get a full order.

I only mention this as I won division 893,899 in last nights lotto. Netting me $44. Miracles do happen!

I've learnt to accept that if I even halfway like a show it will certainly be cancelled well before its time leaving me sputtering about incomplete plots and unfinished cliff-hangers. *sigh*
