Will be spending 2nts Paris June 18/19 and hotel was intending to stay is closed for 18mths for full makeover - so ................ suggestions please for 5* hotel.

Had intended staying left bank at Hotel Lutetia - stayed there 2yrs back and just loved location - walking distance to Latin Qtr etc - so suggestions for something similar greatly appreciated - historic nature / 5* / central location etc - merci beaucoup :lol:

We stayed at Hotel La Belle Juliette back in December 2012. Located in the 6th. Nice place, good location, easy to get around and a handy little bistro/cafe just down the street that we dined at a few times.

People love the George V and of course the Plaza Athenee. Then there's the new Shangri-La. I've not stayed at any of these :). But we did spend a week at the Park Hyatt Vendome a couple of years ago and thought it was outstanding. Great location too.

Did a bit of research myself recently for a 4-5 night stay in Paris in August. Still deciding between Shangrila v Plaza Athenee. The latter seems more classical Parisian which is the look and feel that I am going for but the former really has those "wow" Eiffel views that I know the wife would love. And Shangrila also offers better value for money, in the scheme of things I mean, I don't think its possible to to consider almost A$2k a night as "value" under normal circumstances especially for a non-suite room lol

TBH was kinda thinkin' you'd need to leave with a shoot load of soap to make A$2K/nt seem value.

I'm staying at the IC Le Grande next month. It's a very nice old building, quite centrally located.

Probably not quite on the level of the Vendome or Athenee but significantly cheaper and still proper 5* I believe.

Paris is one of those cities where the hotels don't usually offer the best value for money (London is in that category too) so you may consider burning some points if you want to stay in luxury.
Having said that, the euro is at it's lowest point in years so maybe you can find some reasonable deals, even with our weak dollar.
I like the Westin Vendome, good location and large rooms.

I cannot get that link to work Nizar

Basically the gist of the article is this. It says that the French government has given a 'palace' distinction to some hotels that are considered to be "more than 5 star" but each hotel must meet the following criteria;

*High proportion of Suites
*A certain history and grandeur
*A high staff to guest ratio (at least 3:1)
*A gastronomic restaurant (probably meaning Michelin starred)

The hotels that are long thought among many Parisians to be 'unofficially' on the palace list is the George V, Le Bristol, Plaza Athenee, Le Maurice, the Ritz, and hotel de Crillon. The 'official list' released back in 2011 had all of these on it except omitted George V, hotel de Crillon and the Ritz and included the Park Hyatt Vendome but then a few months later the George V was put on the official list and the Ritz and the hotel de Crillon then embarked on renovations thought by many to help it gain access to the Palace accolade.

I stayed at Hotel Castille 18 months ago and really liked it. Got a great deal from the Luxurylink website. Great location.
