It would have been terrifying for passengers and likely lots of kids onboard. I'm guessing no one who was in that plane would have had any issues with how it was treated. Likely there were no spare seats to have him seated with a Qantas crew member safely. A still shot of a knee in the back is not in context. Given there was no pillow on that still it is likely very early on in his 'capture'. There's also a gent in white shirt trying to stroke his back to pacify. I think Qantas did good.

That’s a DPS “fast track” through the chaos of an overwhelmed terminal. You have to pay extra for that kind of priority service.

Training may have changed but I’d be surprised if it specified several hours of probe restraint…

I would imagine that “probe” restraint would fall somewhat under the classification of cruel and unusual punishment…

On the other hand, why divert? There's no danger to the aircraft.

Recognising the news coverage may be inaccurate, restraining someone prone for “several hours” doesn’t strike me as ideal

You can't leave him in the aisle, the bar/food cart wouldn't be able to get over him.
