Passport Renewal / Application - Time Taken?

Applied well after 12PM on Friday 1 Mar at a Passport RAPID location in Melbourne, paid for priority
Picked up at passport Office Tuesday 5 Mar morning
I wonder why they removed the priority option when renewing internationally. Unless it's back now?

Guys, get two passports and never leave home without both.
That's good advice indeed.

It certainly saved me a lot of (extra) hassle entering Turkey last year, when I discovered that my British passport had gone missing somewhere between LGW and AYT and the only way they would let me into Turkey was via my Aussie passport and a payment of 50 Euros (ouch).

Given the reports here of passports being ripped up in front of their eyes, I held off contacting the Australian Embassy in London regarding my passport with a faulty chip. I figured what could I lose by e-mailing them, with very little information to allow them to cancel it.

Low and behold, I received a reply only 30 minutes later by e-mail - astonished to say the least!

You can come to the passport office with the passport at any time between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday and we can check the chip for you. There is no need to make an appointment.

We can then advise what the appropriate course of action would be. You would not need to attend again.

You would also continue to be able to travel on it until you were in receipt of a replacement.

I will head in next week and report back, but very impressed with the response - albeit it's still likely to cost me a bombshell to fix.

I lodged the passport renewal at Aussie Post this arvo around 4pm

From their website you can go to the DFAT website to be advised until your application lands with them , the clock doesn’t start ticking so who knows how long it takes for the snail mail to get to them

However when it does start tick tick it’s 10 business days for 2 out of 3 to be processed

And then there’s the time it takes for the passport to be delivered by Australia Post to you (here that seems to take about another week)

please report back if it works!
Currently still sitting beneath my Qantas status welcome pack and 10kgs of weights. It's no longer curly, but it's not flat either.

Still have a week before I need to use it so will see how it looks next week.

My current passport expires in Sep.
Considering a weekend trip for an event in Jakarta in May. Indonesia wants 6 months validity remaining, so would need to put in renewal paperwork in the next couple of weeks.

I've never renewed a passport before. The last time I replaced my passport, I had a name change, so had to follow the full application process.
For a normal renewal, do they want any extra paperwork, or just the current passport and new photos?

First
If you jump in before 1 July you get the $346 version before the price rise

If you apply online, you stick in your existing passport number and the system checks if it’s good to prove identity and then If it’s good asks you to PRINT out the document and take it and the soon to be previous passport along to be seen by the Australian Post staffer

They can do passport photos for you too on the spot. It’s all digital photography which they print out for you

I'm in the middle of the online form now. Already said entered info for current passport is good.
Will have to find somewhere with a printer. 😓 😅

Yes
Australia Post do not offer a print document service
My local library does for 15 cents a sheet
The application checklist had no interest for the staffer who vetted my application. Only the one pager

Eventually a friend helped me out and I bluetoothed the document off the mobile phone direct to his printer ! (Having saved it in the DFAT account and saved it to a computer to then send it to my email account to then access it via the mobile phone and save a copy to Files To then work out how to send it to the printer. (Definitely a case of being “put through the ringer”)

I have the pdf that the passport site created saved. I might just upload it to my work account goggle drive and borrow the printer at work. (I did that to print docs for my last RTW trip)
The nearest post office that does passport stuff is a 5 minute walk away from home.

Nope it's actually very quick and simple. Get some passport photos ready. Apply online then print the application, take it to a post office with your current passport and photo and they'll take care of it.

Incidentally event on the first weekend that just made announcements?

its Wednesday am.

and today I received the text message saying the new passport has been sent by registered mail - that's like 3-4 business days for it to be processed!
