Pay Points to Extend Qantas Status

PH valuations are laughable.

In reality, it all depends on how cheaply you can generate Qantas points.

Considering most people think PC+ is a rip off, which values them at 1.5c for J, I'd say it's not far off, if anything it's too conservative.

lol

In any case, you're mistaking two fundamentally different concepts. The cost of points acquisition and the value of points.

The question for someone in this position is: what would it cost me to generate 120,000 extra QFF points?

You're just arguing for the sake of it . Either 120K points is worth more than 1.5c each, in which case PC+ is bad value, or they're worth less than 1.5c, in which case PC+ is great.

You're on record complaining about PC+ (which I don't disagree with), so I can only assume you think they're worth more than 1.5c.

You can't have it both ways.

If you value you your points less because you can get them cheap, then I throw your criticism of PC+ right back at you.

Try to stay on topic. We are talking about the different methods of retaining Gold/Platinum status. Leave your PC+ rants for the other thread.

19 days ago, you could have purchased the 120,000 points for 1.48c/pt (even if you valued the purchased wine at $0). That means it would have cost you $1776 to retain Platinum.

I have already knocked 22% off the cost you assigned to retaining Platinum.

If a person is better at manufactured spending and can acquire points for even less than that, their cost would be even lower.

I see your line of thinking but I don't agree, the fact you got the points cheaper doesn't change the value of the points.

If I win $50 at the casino, that's still worth $50 to me and I'm not going to buy something with an inflated price just because I won $50. Paying for status is dead money, there's no benefit from it at all. At least with a status run, depending on how you do it, you can enjoy a quick mini break or at very least the lounges and onboard service.

Is Platinum even worth 2K? Or even 1.5K? I'd suggest probably not.

(I meant CR+ not PC+ but I think you got that).

If it is a flat rate 120K for 1* thru to 1200 SCs, the equation is more compelling at the higher end. Maybe someone has been ill but on the mend. Retaining without having fly (and back fill point from wine) could be attractive. Others might just be expect a soft landing to SG and move on.

It’s probably academic - I can’t see QF doing it (as alluded to in another thread) - but allowing you to buy (with $) lumps of SCs to make up the gap would be interesting to see how that prices out?

*short 1 to 10 SCs in the “gimmie” range (as reported in other threads).

Yes, I'm viewing as a cost to retain WP, not an outright purchase of WP from nothing.

Called this morning using the “dedicated” phone provided. The recorded greeting was something like “Welcome to QF, thanks for calling regarding your tier retention invitation”. After entering my details, I think I was put through to the Philippines… The person didn’t seemed to know the details but cutting the story short, the current offer is 120k pts to extend WP for 12mths.

It was unclear and I wasn’t going to try dig deeper if that’s the amount for 150 SC shortfall, or 100 SCs shortfall (because I have QF booking) etc.

Anyway, these invite / pay with points seems to be a thing again.

But 120k gets me SYD-Asia (return) in J (and 96 SCs). So it’s a PASS.
Thanks for taking the time to do this and report @SYD. It's a good piece of intel.

Yes, my comment was specifically in relation to “retention”. So the lower bar is in play to start with. But the ability purchase SCs is money for jam as far as QF is concerned. I assume they’ve done the maths on the delta benefits between letting a WP soft land to SG or maintain WP for a fee?

I mean, how much does a few plates of S&P squid cost them?

If you are planning a lot of QF metal redemptions in the next membership year I would say it's worth 120k points (regardless of currency conversion)
Very good point!

And they could offset 1% of that cost with the on-board meals they didn't need to serve you ;)

I don't think it's a terrible deal for QF, you didn't use your status much last year, you didn't fly much, you knock 120K off of their liabilities and you carry forward your benefits for another year. It's pretty close to a win/win bar the other plats kicking up a stink (and the high rev ones probably don't know/care about this). They have been pretty careful to not productise this and to make it an ad-hoc thing.

I think the issue with the $x per SC comparison is that you don't actually earn SC. Might not matter for someone with LTG but buying SC for points (outside of PC and CR/+) would be a great deal, I'd be equally as happy if I qualified or not, depending on how much I missed by of course.

Yes
The earn / burn phenomenon

Qantas are YET to get this balance right

But seeing now they appear to be monetising anything they can get their hands on (eg QC $99 monthly subscription, Points club to earn CR, points to retain status)

Back in the day I scored 3 retentions for FREE
It was pseudo family pooling AT least twice (paying for 4 airfares to Florida kinda does that)

And then there was the COVID “book a flight” retention offer. ($109 later ADL-MEL) which I ended up cancelling as my friend got COVID meant 3 more years with little financial outlay (two J dog leg ADL via Mel To OOL 1,120 credits)

Now with more extravagant means (low super taxes, no mortgage, no kids) the equation is now in my favour and so QF Need come to the party (or will they)

the ability to request CR release as well as a good likelihood of successful upgrades is worth $2k a year for me easily. the Flounges and other perks are a bonus beyond that.
