Thanks, but as I understand you, you have set up a PayPal account which is charged to your Amex.

That's quite different from a merchant being able to accept Amex through PayPal. The whole point of accepting credit (or charge) cards as a merchant is to attract people who don't have a PayPal account.

Anyone tried signing up and saying you're in the US, attaching an AMEX card, then just changing your address to AU?
Could that even work?

Two and a half years since this thread was opened and paypal still do not allow amex.

Interestingly, on their own forums paypal were not able to give a reasonable answer why they didn't . Can't put in the link as don't have 10 posts but you will find if google "ebay forums american express".

Amex used to be accepted by Paypal (for Australians) up to a certain date. At that time, you could no longer register new Amex cards, but could retain your old ones.

I stupidly deleted mine, as I thought I didn't need that card any more.

I believe the core issue is about Merchant Fees and chargeback capabilities of Amex Australia. However, both Amex and Paypal need to get their head out of the sand and resolve their issues...

Although I still my Amex card registered with PayPal, I have only been able to use it when paying an overseas PayPal merchant. I have not been able to use the Amex card via PayPal for any Australian registered PayPal merchant.

amex prolly got sick of all the chargebacks from all the ebay scams and paypal (non) protection policies.
Maybe amex US is more scam tolerant, as Oz has more regulations regarding banking etc (yeh I know, paypal is not a bank, ebay is not an auction site)

I don't believe that to be the case. Initially Paypal was not represented in Australia and Australians used the US PayPal system. At that time Amex was able to be used. But when PayPal started up in Australia (ie Welcome - PayPal), people with Australian billing addresses were moved from the US system to the new Australian system. Right from the outset for the Australian PayPal they have not allowed Amex to be added as a source of funds.

So nothing to do with become sick of scams etc. They never have accepted it at PayPal Australia.

Why is there a need for vultures like Paypal to exist? I thought it would have been simple enough to conduct transactions directly with a merchant. Companies like Paypal and Cabcharge continue to take a percentage of each transaction yet in reality have absolutely nothing to offer....

Yes, that is what happened in my case. I had an Amex registered originally, when Australian PayPal came about I had to register my Visa. Now both my cards are registered, I can use my Amex for overseas Ebay purchases but cannot use it for Australian purchases.

For those who use Ebay the Paypal system, with it's guarantees, are very useful.
