PE to get meals?

Now that would be good news indeed!

Virgin Blue would then (for a lesser cost than the QF full flex) be bale to say

- better seat / legroom
- better catering choice (ie in QF Y on SYD-MEL you may not get a choice)
- better IFE
- more FF points (ie $399 SYD-MEL would be about 2,000 for a base member, 1000 with QF0
- Lounge Access

Now that would be a winner IMHO. Just need an effective ad campaign to make sure people are aware of it.

Bundy Bear,

If I recall correctly, this was your suggestion at the dinner back in August to the bloke from VB.

Then i would suggest someone was listening! wow. :D
Whilst someone may have been listening,I think think the fact that punters have so far voted with their wallet and avoided DJs PY product has forced their hand here.
The interesting thing is DJ operate like all LCCs on a cost recovery model ie you pay for every ancillary item like baggage etc, will they be forced to roll the cost of Food/Drinks& paper into the current fare or will they add another $15-20 to the price to recover the cost
Time will tell.

I think perhaps the 1% load factor in DJ's PE may have helped give them a nudge as well ;)

But it is a good development, hopefully they can just communicate it SIMPLY and effectively for once instead of the rubbish confusing advertising they have had for DJ and V Australia recently.

Hope they don't put the price up even more.... its still v expensive.

Expensive is a relative term. In the short term, competitive influences, demand and corporate failures will drive prices up and down. But is $4k for a RTW whY ticket to Europe / US that expensive for the service and the relative convenience?

Over the longer term, i see the prices rising quite dramatically - as supply will not keep up with demand [nearly at effective capacity in many markets now - building new airports is not viable] and technology will become more expensive to manage efficiency / safety / environmental footprints.

This discussion concerns DJ PY Domestic product changes rumoured
not INT

A couple of days ago I was seated next to a DJ staffer. She works with the travel agents (forget her title now). I discussed this topic with her and she was not even aware of the offering.

I have no doubt that this is happening, but found it curious that this person did not know what was happening. She said she often finds out things from passengers!

Bring it on, and then, a couple of free upgrades for regulars to "taste" the new improved offering.

Slightly off topic and please do not take this the wrong way. Why would anyone purchase premium economy on DJ? For the extra leg room or the extra seat width?

The other night I was booking SYD-BNE return flights from January-March. What caught my eye was premium economy priced at $414 one-way! You can purchase 3 seats for $207 on the Go fare airfare or $300 on the Blue saver airfare. OK you don't get the extra legroom, unless you stretch out sideways, but you do get the extra seat width and since you have so saved a bundle you can purchase lounge entry and spend as much as you like on in flight meals....

QF J SYD-BNE is usually $586 or so though, so maybe some see $414 as ok but i would go the cheap Y fares :)

That's the right direction for DJ. I'm surprised it took that long!

(Although, now the onboard staffers have yet another way to give free drinks and food to their friends/colleagues by "billing" it to a PE client! )
Mal,

As usual your cynicism is probably correct.

I'd like to know how often you have seen this. I take a minimum of 2 flights every week and have been doing so for over 6 years. Being on duty travel I sit in the same zone as other staff (leisure) and duty travellers - i.e. down the back. I have only once or twice in that time seen cabin crew give water bottles to non-duty staff pax - and this was from the crew supply of water bottles not the "for sale" items. Uniformed crew who are deadheading get water bottles from the crew supply in any case. I have never seen crew give anything from the "for sale" cart to travelling colleagues and assure you that I would have them nailed for it if I did.

I suspect that if it was happening, the staff involved would be more careful about how it was done (eg a visit to the galley). The manifest would show staff travel wouldn't it, thus they would be careful to not do it in front of other staff or 'guests' who may tell DJ.

I can't recall seeing it occur on a DJ flight. Have seen it on other carriers though.

Perhaps a swipe of the Pax's velocity card when they are given said items.... I presume this is how bmi do it in the UK. that way DJ can still keep a count on stock and that it has been used appropriately.
