Well it's about time we Sandgropers got ourselves organised, and setup a regular drinks or event night for the ever growing contingent West of the Nullarbor.

I'd like to propose the establishment of such a regular event, but before we do anything I'd like to find out who is interested, and also get ideas for same.

I've quickly nutted out some ideas below. Please take a few moments to have a read and reply back with your thoughts and input. From there I can consolidate the feedback and we can move forward on a consensus.

Interest

The big question is how many of you would be interested in a regular Perth meet? There's quite a few of us here, and I know for a fact that a good number of us Perth AFF members are some of the most wonderful, knowledgeable and personable people you could meet - even if I do say so myself ;)

Venue

There's a few venues we could choose, either the same one each time or spread the love around a bit depending on feedback.

Some of the possible venues could include a bar or similar at any of the following more central locations:

  • Rydges Perth
  • Holiday Inn (good to earn extra PC points at with Topguest and social media check-ins)
  • Parmelia Hilton
  • Hyatt Regency
  • ICH Burswood or HI Burswood
We could always mix it up once in a while, convening in a restaurant in Northbridge, Fremantle or anywhere else that takes the group's fancy.

And for those of us with DJ Plat (either acquired through BIS or status match), there might be enough to make their lounge staff nervous every once in a while.

Day and time

My initial thinking is something mid-week, if only to prepare one's self for the downhill slide to the weekend. However, I'm not sold on a fixed day, and it could easily be moved to something on a weekend if SWMBO's or significant others wanted to attend or a dinner/lunch function is planned.

Ideally, the main meetup should try and fall on a regular day (such as the Xth Wednesday of every X) so it's easy to put in our respective diaries and remember when it's on.

Mixing it up

What does everyone think of changing up the meet every once in a while, swapping it to a weeknight or even weekend lunch/dinner every once in a while (say three to six months apart). Something even less formal and more relaxed perhaps.

Anyway, there's some quick ideas. Reply back if you're interested, or would like to throw some ideas or thoughts into the mix for consideration.

My thoughts would be a non-hotel bar. Generally (but not always) the prices will be better. That being said.. I drove down the high street in Perth last week and so much has changed I don't think I could even begin to suggest any possible alternative venues!

I'm in. Dinner at Atrium is a winner :-)

I was thinking of putting an idea up about a pre-xmas drinks/meal for us Perthites as Cove had also suggested it recently... I just haven't been on the forum as long as plenty of others..

Yep I would be up for such meet ups... A number of different bars around northbridge/city/maylands - Brass Monkey, Tiger Lils, Queens, The Brisbane, Paddy Hannan's often also close to places to eat, or we could do the Royal in East Perth like when Lindsay came over... They might also be a bit better value than the bars in hotels that i don't often frequent.. And yeah could mix it up a bit, not the same thing everytime...

So yeah I would be up for it when i'm not off travelling.. :)

Last time I drank at the Royal was pricey, but the location is really nice just down on the river inlet.

Just make sure if I do ever return to Perth, there's an honorary drinks for me ;)

Doesn't Perth have any proper bars?

Sounds good. I'm flexible but agree that non-hotel bars would be better and like the idea of mixing it up.

I'd be a keen newbie:)

I always enjoy the Royal, but some other suggestions are the new rooftop bar at The Aviary on William street, Belgian Beer Cafe, Bar One, CBD Bar, or Boheme. All of these are likely to get busy pre Christmas though.

I like the idea of a post work, CBD venue except for Fri night as the City is overcrowded and unpleasant (like Perth QP;))

You don't expect threads to stay on topic for too long do you? ;)

I like the idea of the meet / catchup, but don't like the idea of the city. My vote is for Burswood, plenty of options, plenty of parking and the train (if you are brave).

I'm keen, Burswood is good for me too but city is ok too.
