All this negative talk about the B738 is making me nervous for my SYD-DPS flights next year...!

If you really have to then go exit row aisle.

Don't get me wrong, I fly in them once a fortnight minimum, but only for 90 minutes. They're just not a good plane for longer flights for a variety of reasons IMO.

The exit rows recline. They're just locked into the upright position for take-off and landing.

Row 4 isn't a certainty unless you're P1. An exit row is provided you stump up the cash and you're early enough.
Getting a row 4 seat won't be a problem for me. The question is, between row 4 and exit row which would you rather? ;)

Row 4 has the advantage of quickly off the aircraft (really only advantageous if you're connecting or HLO). First of the exit rows means you can recline fully at any time and not worry about impacting on the space of the person behind you. Also, the exit row doesn't have the tray table/entertainment unit in the armrest.

I actually prefer the exits, not a big fan of the armrest tables. I'm not a recliner either.

I have flown QF from PER -> SIN but not v.v. I have started booking fully flex economy and requesting an upgrade to J. This one was a positioning flight for a trip to Europe on EK in J. It was much cheaper to do it this way than ex PER. Plus PER -> DXB is too long for my liking. Although the plane is pretty blah, J was a big improvement on Y for me.

So far with the last 15 flights, mostly domestic, flights, I am 13/15. This number also includes Mr. and Ms. s.
