Perth to Hobart transit via Melborne

I totally agree. We're planning a trip to WA later this year and would much prefer to go with Virgin, but don't want to transit, not because of inconvenience but because of the risk of being denied admission or sent into quarantine because of transit vis Sydney or Melbourne.
 
No problems at the moment.WA is low risk and tassie have usually allowed transit even through high risk areas even allowing an overnight stay in an approved hotel.



aahh but not the reverse as I discovered this morng. WA view Mel airport as part of high/med risk greater Mel, so it’s so it’s a no-go (or 14 day Qtine) if you want to go HBA via MEL to PE bloody R….

Exactly. With the delta strain being so much more serious than earlier ones and the situation in NSW deteriorating rapidly and Vic facing uncertainty, the only thing that's certain is that nothing is certain. To choose an itinerary that transits thru Mel or Syd from anywhere and to anywhere would be very risky.

And that's why there is a direct flight from HBA to PER.

(Actually, even going PER-HBA via MEL would put you into quarantine on return to WA unless you stayed in Tasmania for 14 days.)

It is also possible to fly Hobart to Perth via Adelaide. I'd still prefer a direct flight but if for some reason that's not available, transit thru Adelaide would be a better bet than Mel or Syd for obvious reasons.

And that's why there is a direct flight from HBA to PER.

Yes there's a direct flt - QF 5 or 6 days a week at QF trans-con prices too, VA no longer fly direct and only via Mel on the dates we wanted, and thus no Adel transit applied.

As to the second part of yr post, about qtine on return to Tas, the short of it is :

- Based on current Public Health advice, travellers from low-risk areas are permitted to transit directly through medium or high-risk areas without being subject to quarantine requirements when arriving in Tasmania if they comply with the following:

This is the reason for my original grump - WA appears to be the only state that doesnt allow airport transits thru high/med risk places...
 
I think SA aren't allowing transit thru Sydney airport - hence the returning Olympic athletes being "pinged" both in Sydney and in SA on return.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tas doesn't adopt similar policies soon - you're definitely doing the most sensible thing. And if it's your first time coming to Tas I'll be happy to give you any info or advice I can.
 
It was disappointing when VA dropped their direct HBA-PER flight. Direct travel between consistently 'low-risk' centres like Hobart, Darwin, Perth, and (to a lesser extent) Adelaide is largely limited to Qantas and Jetstar flights at the moment. I wish I could fly VA, but I just don't want to transit.

I thought they might re-enter the route but remember they fired thousands of staff and binned 1/3 of their fleet when Bain ran the knife through them, so they have to pick and choose where to fly a lot more carefully these days.

Also the problem is when QF enters a market they vacuum up the higher yielding passengers. VA2 is left with the scraps and somethings the lower yielding passengers can mean the route is then unprofitable.

V kind thanks, but we live not a long way down the hill from Ferntree in Postcode 7005 (assuming Ferntree is yr domicile..) I am just cranky that Wa gov website doesn’t readily allow one to check arrival there via a transit airport, something that’s easy to find on other state gov sites. We hv now booked expensively with QF for direct return flts to PER. Oh well, it’s only 4h30 over there and 3h45 back…
 
Yes, Qantas fares on flights between East and West coasts are diabolical.

SA is also on WA's naughty list. So coming here via ADL won't help in this case.

Seems like QF maybe obtaining good loads as they’re now daily on PER - HBA compared to the original 3 flights weekly.


On Friday there are 4 HBA-PER services, and 3 services each on Sunday and Monday. Grand Final related.

If you went back in time 2 years and posted on here that there will be a day in the not too distant future where there will be 4 non-stop flights between Perth and Hobart people would have thought you completely bonkers.
 
VA just announced the start of HBA-ADL flights from October 22 and the resumption of seasonal HBA-PER flights from October 29.
