Pets in the Cabin - Coming soon on Virgin Australia

Welcome to AFF @Healthy Traveller 🙂

I will NOT travel on any airline that allows pets inside the cabin with my family!

Fortunately there are choices out there.

As an aside, I wonder how people who fear an allergic reaction cope with service animals being on board? Brtter behaved, but usually larger than what's proposed and shed like anything.

Or indeed on many overseas Airlines where an animal might have been at their seat immediately before them?

Or the biosecurity dogs at immigration, and domestically at HBA, for instance?

I'm actually surprised so many ppl are allergic to dogs/cats and they are all here in AFF.
Umm. Why surprised? People with allergies can travel and many do so for work.

My future Niece has an assistance dog. It's huge. White. Is allowed to go anywhere. I dread the day when husband meets the niece with the dog. It's an issue in the family that I don't go into. The dog is certified. One Christmas the house we were having dinner in had a Labrador. I couldn't understand why MrP kept going outside on such a hot day. He explained he was simply trying to breathe. The dog didnt go near him, he never patted it. It was just in the room. He wasn't always allergic. He developed it when he was being treated for cancer. In his twenties. He had a labrador as a childhood pet with no issues.

I love dogs. Always had them in my life. Until this happened. I still love dogs. I miss them in my life. 🥹. But not on a plane.

I will NOT travel on any airline that allows pets inside the cabin with my family! Dogs can whine and bark and I can not imagine eating a meal on an aircraft just as a dog dumps a load whether it's poo or vomit. The smell would make me vomit. All because some minority pet owners want their pets with them. Isn't that nice!!! The pets are NOT humans. They should NOT be in cabins. Where is the safety issue here. In an emergency these selfish people will be reluctant to leave without their pet. Hand carry must be left so should pets. But these people will clog the isle with the beasts and maybe be arguing with cabin staff. Just imagine yap yap yap yap for a whole flight. Or meowwwww for a whole flight. Cats can poo with fright also. Changes in pressure will set animals off as it does some children. We may as well go completely 3rd world and allow chickens, ducks, goats etc to travel with us as well. What is WRONG with the world now it's NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No pet carrying airline for me. Dogs STINK!
Perspective please!

I can assure you that my two dogs (who probably won’t ever travel) are much better behaved than many children and a few other people that we have had to tolerate on numerous flights.

Last year I accepted a film shoot in my home that involved a horse inside. Ultimately the shoot didn't come together but the location manager asked me why I would accept such an assignment. I told him a well trained horse would likely cause less damage inside than say a 7yo child actor might. Oh, and then there was the money. ;)
I think if Viking Cruises venture into airlines they'd clean up with child free flights.

Well yes I’m sure they are.

Perspective please- children are people too.

I posted above that the FAA - and that’s in one of the most litigious countries in the world - has basically said there is no little issue with animals being carried in the cabin as the allergens are basically everywhere, all the time, anyway. And there are HEPA filters.

If the US can manage pets in the cabin, and the law suits haven’t been enough to deter the airlines, can’t see why Australia will be different? Surely we are as smart as our US and UK counterparts when it comes to identifying and working out issues?

As for concerns about animals needing to go to the toilet… errr… anyone seen the state of airline WCs after a few pax have used them? We can’t even keep the floor clean!

Yeah I need inhaler fairly quickly, and to get away from the source. Easier said than done on a full flight.
Hopefully shouldn’t be an issue.Protocols already in place for guide dogs. And if a person was to approach with a pet you can leave your seat immediately and speak with the crew. Should be little to no time needed next to an animal.

Basically this is going to boil down to economics - how many extra passengers will now fly Virgin if they can take their animals on board vs how many extra passengers will Qantas gain from people not wanting to sit next to animals on Virgin. My FF loyalty is already with QF so I don't need to make a choice.

I think you're probably right, and if it's a success on VA then QF/JQ will follow the money.

To the naysayers - this is us and our backwards air travel policies finally starting to catch up with the rest of the developed world, they same to be coping ok with it
