I use PGR quite a bit, only because the international branded hotel rates are getting too expensive for business travel allowanaces and Rydges/QT has a much better coverage in Australia and NZ especially as I do regional or edge of city travel too. (Having recently held elite tier in Hyatt, Hilton and IHG, it was getting exhausting (and costly) to find available hotels).
Loosing GHA was a bit of a hit. The lack of international partners was a shame as I did use it.
A few things I like:
1. Black Member 50% discount on dinner/drinks can be a huge saving especially if it is a better restaurant. (QT Auckland/Perth/Canberra, Rydges Christchurch/Kalgoorlie, two in BNE/Newcastle/Tamworth etc)
2. The late check out is also a big benefit. Have rarely had it knocked back, but make sure you remind them.
3. The reward point system is really simple and increases with your status level and if smart you can get some great free nights at peak times.
4. The Black member rates for rooms can be stacked with promotions at times meaning some very good rates can be had especially on packages.
Things they could do better:
1. Upgrades are not common. Mainly based on regular visits not status.
2. Services in some hotels can be average with some not really having restaurants (or really poor ones) or not open every night, so that benefit is worthless. Similarly the "free welcome drink" can range of what ever you like, to something not worth drinking. Typically, many of the hotels fail to mentioned this benefit.
3. Some of the hotels are not participating in full - so read the fine print. For example hotels in Darwin have very little benefits.
4. Brand standards are quite variable - some Rydges are better than QTs, some Atura better than Rydges etc. Independent Collection hotels are just that!
5. No long term loyalty aspect to the program and the free night points expire without warning so make sure you use them.
6. There is very little PGR member support if things don't go well or if there is an issue.
Overall I am ok with PGR as it suits my travel needs, but a refresh of the program would be most welcome.
