Are the paintings in a gallery or private, why not take the glass off? Otherwise never use a flash, slightly off center but nearly dead square on to reduce reflection while keeping an eye on the light source. Sometimes you have to admit defeat and accept it's only going to be an average shot if you can't move the object.
