Im planning a Business Class RTW trip through Qantas/One World.

At this stage I dont know when I will return, do I need to book my return date when making the initial booking?

You can make most changes (including add and removing flights) until you take the first flight. After, you can only chage dates of existing flights. That is if you find awards seat when making a change. There is a change fee peassener per booking, I think 5k points.

Depends on what sort of ticket you are looking at.

There are 2 round the world ticket types from oneworld Multi-City Flights: Round The World Airline Tickets - RTW

There is also an award type from Qantas that they call a oneworld award.

The rules and booking process for each is different

Welcome to AFF @StevoC 🙂. As others have mentioned, we need to know whether this is a paid around the world or one on points.

there’s a lot of advice to be given on either scenario. For instance, if it’s a paid round the world, a travel agent can book it for you on a ticket other than Qantas and you may save literally a thousand dollars or more on fees and charges, depending on the airline it's ticketed on.

Also, what status tier you are.
If you are WP/P1, ie, the Platinum side, you can get the HBA call centre, for itineary, obviously, can do it online for non complicated itineraries, but for the more complicated ones, ... you would need them (call centre/or overseas call centers), if lower grade QF status tier member.
According to the stories on here, there are some cases where you might have to HUACA, ie, Hang up and call again, if you get a CSA who says, no, can't be done, hopefully you will get a more knowledgeable CSA the next call.

A RTW fare is a paid fare and can be booked online or via a travel agent, no need to call the QF call centre at all so status should make no difference. It has strict rules re no backtracking, number of stops in each continent etc

A One World Award (OWA) is a very different beast, you do not actually need to fly around the world, need to use two OW airlines apart from QF etc.

For an OWA you can add legs to an existing PNR until it meets the OWA rules and the points get capped. So do not need to know all flights upfront, but if you dont book all upfront online then a call to QF will be required.

For an actual RTW fare per ChrisMars advice, changes possible until first flight within the fare rules.

oneworld has 2 RTW fares. The continent based oneworld explorer, which only allows oneworld members to be used, and the distance based Global explorer, which allows a handful of non oneworld members in addition to the alliance members.
