Planning a RTW via Qantas One World

Phwoar! - some exotic ports there .

Yes. $ optimised when they were purchased. Colombo was easy, Karachi more difficult as they didn't take credit cards so had to use transfer agents and the like. Did same plane turnarouds for both KHI tickets on CX services.

But there are substantial other advantages to starting outside Australia as you can make it into a couple of overseas trips split by some domestic travel over a year with a bit of planning.

Thanks for all the advice. We would like to take lots of the advice but time work and kids coming home have placed a limit on what we can do.
Current plan is AKL-SYD-JFK-BOS-ORD-SEA-LAX-LHR-ATH-MTC (via DOH as one segment hopefully) HKG-PER and final sector MEL-SYD-AKL. I dont think we quite make WP on this but close and we will have a few flights and SC before we leave.
USA flights designed to max SC and go to places one of us has been to show the other or work, apart from LAX which was purely thrown in as I had 1 sector left and it has more SC than SEA-LHR. But we are always willing to look at alternatives for in interesting stop with good SC:)

Using only 4 of your 6 allowed US sectors, and having some short sectors in what you've planned, cruels you on maximising SCs. If WP is a goal, I'd work a bit harder on flights in the US. Eg. try ORD-xDFW-SEA and SEA-xDFW-LAX?

I looked at this with huge eyes and had thought of big days of flying like BOS-MSY via ORD (or DFW) or BOS-ANC. But the Oneworld calculator says these would be 2 sectors and when I phoned QF to double check they agreed and the wisdom here as the final testament concurs. I could maybe fit in ANC but the flight times are aweful for the type of seat offered. I like SC but not enough to spend 6 hours on an overnight redeye in old A320 J seat
Skyring I think I can go from SYD-JFK as 1 sector and I can go back to West Coast, but once there I cant go back to East Coast zones.
The timing fits JFK and BOS for work then we have time before a work required stop in HKG.
Still happy to look at alternative suggestions.

When is this planned for?
AA is starting LAX-AKL soon (which will have a QF codeshare). You could do something like AKL-LAX-BOS-JFK-ORD-SEA-LAX-LHR-EU/Asia-PER-MEL-BNE-AKL, or AKL-SYD-DFW-etc.
Noticed you don't have a US transcon. You're allowed 1 US transcon and 1 AU transcon (and 2 flights between LON and middle east). If you're looking at a DONEx, you get first on internal US 2 class flights. So long as you avoid the A32Ts on JFK-LAX/SFO and the 777s on LAX-MIA, you'll get a lot of SCs for an first class transcon (some longer options are MIA-SEA, SEA-JFK and BOS-LAX)

AA has PHX-ANC year round and DFW-ANC seasonally. BOS-ANC would be at least 2 sectors, unless there was a tag flight on BOS-PHX or BOS-DFW using the same flight number as the ANC flight.

You can go between the east and west coast as much as you like, provided you don't use more then 6 sectors in North America and make only 1 non stop transcon. There is no reason you can't do SYD-JFK-SEA-DFW-BOS.

These are the DONE3's I've taken over the years
NRT-SIN-HKG-JFK-DFW-ORD-MCO-DFW-SEA-JFK-CDG-HEL-LHR-DXB-LHR-HKG-SIN 41637 mi

Hi can you actually get SC flying RTW with points? I'm all new to this but the prospect looks promising.

Thanks everyone for the help. The travel agent and my wife look at me with a strange look:?: but we are sorted.
AA flights, AKL-LAX-MSY-BOS(VIA DFW)-ORD-SEA. BA flights SEA-LHR-ATH. QR flights ATH-MCT (via DOH)-HKG (via DOH). CX flights HKG-HND. JL flight HND-PEK. CX flights PEK-HKG-AKL.
Again, thanks for the support and help in thinking fro alternatives.
2 things I have just started using. Tripcase, using SABRE reservations, easy to use and you can add cars, hotels etc. And Rome2Rio looks great for getting around

Not jealous here ... much!!

Was this booked as an AA RTW or QF (Codeshare on AA AKL-LAX)? If the latter, what is the benefit - if any?

Regards,

BD

I've just locked away this DONE5 to keep me amused 1 Feb-8 April 2017.

DONE5.JPG

I ran into a glitch doing it online on the OneWorld site. It came up as valid and priced OK but when I went to pay it threw up an error. Gave it a few tries but still the same message so ended up phoning QF. It turns out that there was no D availability SCL-MAD on the date I originally chose (even though the OW online booking engine showed D available). Anyway, very helpful Adele re-built it over the phone. I moved the SCL-MAD forward one day and it's all set up. Didn't have to pay the manual booking fee.

That's the first time I've had a problem with the OW online booking engine.

I'll position PER-SYD-PER using my 'free' Amex QF Ultimate card flight, so it ensures the 4 squiggles are also tucked away for the onward WP march while the itinerary (DorAONEx number 13 in the last 13 years) will yield a tidy 1550 or thereabouts SCs and around 95K points ;):D.

(DorAONEx number 13 in the last 13 years)
I started traveling on my own overseas in 2005. That trip was just around the US with a series of US internal one ways and a SYD-SFO via AKL return.
2006 was an LGLOB26 (due to using JAL before they were part of oneworld and not in the oneworld explorer, but they were part of the global explorer)
2007-2009 was a yearly LONE4 ex CBR.
2010-2015 was a yearly DAS13 ex CBR with a DONE3 ex Japan or Korea linked to the DAS13 midpoint.
Will have another this year, but haven't started planning yet.

So 1 LGLOB26, 3 LONE4's, 6 DONE3's and 6 DAS13's over the last 10 years. :)
