Plat Edge Free Flight PER - HBA?

Dear Learned AFFers,

The missus and I have just received our Amex Plat Edge cards, and now we're daydreaming about taking some annual leave and using the free flight.

I hope this isn't too stupid a questions, but whats the cheapest way to get to Hobart from Perth? Should I simply book the free flights to Melbourne, and then pay for the flights between MEL and HBA? I read in another post about booking, cancelling, rebooking etc... is that worthwhile?

I think that would be the cheapest way. Redeem your free flight to MEL and buy another ticket MEL-HBA

Also don't forget the JQ price match on the MEL-HBA sector. I regularly find prices under $40 one way on that leg.
