Platinum AMEX Renewal during covid-19

I have my annual fee due today and unsure if I have to hold the card looking at the prospects of air travel in the coming months. Did anyone have a luck in any new retention offer if not 200K points. Cheers

I just called to "cancel" and have been offered 120k points, no questions asked.
For the (algorithm) record, I haven't spent anything on the card for many many months. My annual is due in April and I haven't used my travel credit. Amazed that they would want to keep me :)

My experience of the Platinum AMEX charge card in the UK here: Double Amex MR points until 20 July 2020

Not many points offered, but have since had lots of decent spend offers which the spend = the full amount you'll receive back.

Are you finding that you're getting lots of points but no spend X get Y back offers that essentially amount to 'free' goods and services?

I spoke to AMEX yesterday as my fee is due soon. No offer of anything. I am now leaning towards cancelling the card for now.

$350 offer back on groceries just came out this morning

Hmmm, I don't see that in my offers yet. Will keep any eye out but even then, it isn't enough to keep me. The big perks for me, as someone who can never really earn status anywhere, was all the travel benefits, and I definitely got my moneys worth.

I have recieved no offer on groceries though i did get one for $400 mid year.renewal due in feb

So I have called up to cancel and was offered 120,000 which I declined because I said you didn't offer last time, so I used all my points in preparation to close the account. She said oh, they should have offered you this immediately. I said the card has no real value this next year, so if I could cancel. I am not getting any offers on the card to use (like the grocery one).

Then they said my flights booked on the card would be subject to cancellation if I don't rebook by end of December. I said the travel credit was part of the 2019 fee and that it shouldn't matter and queried where exactly I could travel right now on AA. I also said I have been told the value of the ticket is valid till the end of 2021. I said I don't think that is correct, so she double checked. The value of the ticket will remain and the travel credit will still apply, but I still have to rebook by end of the year. So I will call the travel line to confirm that it is in fact 2021. They also said I'd have to deal with AA moving forward but I also disagree with that.

I called Amex a month ago when my platinum charge card ticked over into the new year. I basically said I was unable to justify the card fee and was offered 200k points. I used the points to pay (most of) the annual fee. The retention agent was Sydney based and the whole process took about a week or so from the time of the call to using the points to pay.
I also let the agent know that I deducted the annual fee from my monthly bill. Amex then agreed that they would effectively put the fee on hold while the whole process was finalised. I hope this data point helps...

Asked about a cheeky fee waiver, got nope, but got 200k points.... Full experience and deets in the amex cancellation thread.

This sounds promising...
My only concern is the card (in my terms and spend) is being abused atm and will continue into the new year. Fee due in Feb.

These were the same issues I raised last year when Covid was very early on in its form. Got nada.

I wonder if I should start now

Edit: can we go to green card and keep ascent premium?

Any thoughts on using the Platinum travel credit before cancelling the card?
I was offered a meagre 60000 points.

At this point, I'd say use it on hotels - but I imagine the deals in Aus are quite good atm?

Can you not do a quick trip interstate now that everything's calmed down a bit more?

There are also 'experiences' I think in the Amex travel portal that are sometimes pretty sweet?

Thank you, I'm wondering if I can use the 450 credit and then cancel the platinum card

Have my annual fee coming up in February. Should I try my luck now or wait until later?

It doesn't hurt to ask I guess, but based on my experience:
When you talk about it, they don't offer anything.
When you actually say you'll cancel, they offer something.
