From what I understand, xASA tickets are advantageous only if you credit the earn to QFF.

To be specific, those xASA's that book into Qantas award classes won't earn on AAdvantage.

It is conceivable a (often 1M+ points) JASA booking that's in C, I, D or J class would earn with AAdvantage.

If you do yupp fares do they count towards the plat challenge at the first class rate?

Yes they do - generally book into P/A/I/Y class which all earn 1½ EQP per mile. As always carfully check the fare bucket each segment books into before completing your booking.
