Platinum Newsletter

First Platinum Newsletter in a while - here are the highlights:
  • Personalised stats for recipient - how many QF flights, BIS km, points earned, points used
Assuming this was since 1st Jan 2023 I think there was a bit a glitch in their calculations; whilst the QF flights and points earn seems about right, my points redeemed is way off.

Tells me I've used 5,337 Qantas Points but I redeemed a J OWA for 318k, 5k change fee and 164k for J SD-HNL return,

  • QF/Accor Paris competition - J return flights for two + 5 nights at Sofitel Paris Baltimore Tour Eiffel. Enter by 18 Dec.
Entered this, at least its in J unlike @JohnM's Italy prize in whY.

Ditto, although JohnM's prize was from Qantas Wines. They've also been running a Paris/Champagne holiday with Moet Chandon, which is economy only too. But I've still entered that as well this trip.
I've also entered. I got chatGPT to suggest what my answer should be and then adapted from that, just for a few 🤣 😆 😁.
I hadn't thought of that. What instructions did you give it to shape its response e.g. grovelling, overly romantic etc.. ?

Nah, not that fancy. I asked it to write a 25 word competition entry for a trip to Paris sponsored by an airline and a hotel company. Its first effort was pretty much a string of hashtags #hilarious. So I kept asking for another one, and got something vaguely useful which I adapted to something like "first I'll freshen up at my accor hotel then I'll visit my two favourite spots. making memories, thanks QF"

I went for the grovelling & overly romantic angle - "Go to the Eiffel Tower where I proposed to MrsK, and take her back there to recreate the moment as a surprise". I'm not too proud if it gets us a trip to Paris in J. Although, I am that greedy if I won the Qantas Wine trip, I would take that too.

I wrote an acrostic poem:

Peruse the Palace of Versailles,
Admire the art at the Musee d'Orsay,
Rediscover Montmartre,
Indulge in fine French wine and cuisine,
Savour the moments

unlikely to get read by a human, but a friend who wins a lot of competitions swears by acrostics.

Surely the 25 words are not actually going to be read and are just to get around 'skill vs lottery' legislation! Having said that, I googled aesthetic unusual views of Paris, to give them a good image to go with my successful trip (as my fat mug ain't going to 'fly' in marketing).

Google's Bard gave me some poetry: "Notre Dame's hush - secrets whispered in stone, echoes of saints and kings unknown."
Not that you can actually visit Notre Dame right now, haha.

I didn't get the newsletter this time... or the mail that some got with 2023 travel stats... and also didn't get the special edition QF magazine in the post... feeling rather unloved :(

As I needed to visit the family in QLD next March, today I decided to use the 20% discount offer to book a business seat.

Before I booked, I checked the price I would pay as a "walk up" customer on the web site. I was looking at QF 1907. You can clearly see that the only business class fare offered was $972.

So then I followed the special offer link, expecting to get a fare at around $780 (ie 20% off $972). Imagine my surprise (not) when this is what was offered to me:

Special offer of $909 - that is an actual discount of less than 7% - WTF is QF doing????? Are they deliberately trying to cheese off WPs??? Needless to say, I booked a CR for myself and Mr Seat 0A (hence the unavailability of reward seats on this flight, sorry everyone else) and am for sure on a program of whittling away my points balance to be able to break up with QF. I read the small print too, and did not see anything that would explain the coughpy discount being offered except the highlighted part

Sure we will give you a Qantas VIP Exclusive Fare - and it will potentially be worse than the fare we offer the general public. Wow. Just wow.

what legislation is that? I am guessing this has to do with the idea that earning Platinum status takes skill but flying with Qantas is a bit of a lottery, huh?

Is there a P1 offer as well? I was Platinum but since changing cant access the link anymore / now not eligible...

There is this, which I think is similar to WP.
