Platinum Reserve companion card!

My partner and I just do the great amex conversion of 2016. We both had the velocity platinum, and I had the QF premium. I called to cancel the velocity, and was offered 20,000 points to retain, they credited immediately. My partner called and they offered him 2,500 (yup, nowhere near my offer). Same day, applied for the Charge with a friends referral, got the 120K bonus within a week, cancelled the velocity, and added my partner as a supplementary to the charge. My partner applied for the Edge, and added me as a supplementary, and I added the reserve to my account. Although the flight options aren't all the same, at least we can go to SA or something for a weekend away.... The Platinum Charge/Reserve/Edge conversion was just in April, I tried to get a bonus on the Reserve (I'm greedy) and there was no luck.

The point is, I had to make us a list of what card to use when... Edge for grocery and petrol, etc. etc. But well worth it. After a year of taking advantage of offers, combined with our spend, we are flying SYD-SIN (3 day stay)- DOH- FCO in J (SQ and QR), and LHR-SIN-SYD in F Suites on SQ!!! Annual fee of the charge and taxes on rewards all added up, I think we are paying maybe $2,000 - $3,000 max for $30,000 in airfares, making it one fantastic trip to Europe next year to look forward to.

Is it possible to get the Reserve card just to redeem the flight, then cancel it and change to the Edge for the points earn? Has anyone been able to do this with their platinum charge card?

They won't wave the fee for the edge as a companion card, only the reserve.

You might be able to "convert" the Reserve to the Edge (paying the Edge annual fee) after using the Reserves free flight - you'd need to ring AMEX and ask. The only benefit to this that I can see though, is if you already hold two Amex CC's (excluding the Charge) and want both the Reserve and Edge free flights without holding both cards at the same time.

so did any one else get the 100k offer with the reserve card when calling AMEX?

I've called my guy at Amex this morning (who helped me with my Business Charge). No 100K on Reserve application, no option to switch to the Edge as my free card. If I want the Edge earn rate, I need to apply for that separately (he won't even deal with the Edge - it's not available to him) and pay the annual fee.

Are you saying you got offered 100k and the Reserve Card if you apply for a Platinum Charge card?

If not, what exactly are you saying?

You can apply for the Edge using the referral link for 15k amex points and no annual fee for the first year.

Can you refer yourself? That looks like a pretty good option given the fee-free year and free flight.

I've got a platinum business charge which enables me to refer the edge (when I click on my referral link, I can choose the edge as an alternative to the business charge).

Well in that case, give it a go!

I guess it can't hurt - even if I don't get the bonus points in the new card (since I already have other Amex cards). Would be nice even if I get the free flight and card fee for the first year. Will try and report back...

Can you confirm this worked - Interested in doing so myself. Did you earn points even though you had the Bus card?

Sorry, I never got round to getting the edge. Ended up getting another card for ATO spend and a personal visa and thought I might wait a while before getting a new card. Also, spend on the reserve card gets the premium version of reward points which still includes Qantas.

Has anyone cancelled their Platinum Charge but kept the Reserve? I'm thinking of doing this and getting the new explorer card... 3points on the reserve for restaurants would be good but 1.5 on the other card would be great for everyday spend.

Is the reserve worth the $400 annual fee unless you're flying to NZ with your 'free' flight? If you're spending heaps on eating out, maybe but I agree with you 1.5 FF/$ on all spending is more valuable.

Well I do get a lot of points this way and its more than just eating out... It is coffee in the morning, work lunches and breakfast of the weekends. Then there's dinners etc which can add up if you pay for the group & then get the money back.

I'm not sure I would want to give that up. The explorer card basically cancels out its annual fee with a travel credit so I'd be going from paying $1200 to $400 (i'm assuming that's the fee from your advice but haven't been able to confirm that yet) for the Reserve card which also comes with a flight to either NZ or BNE/other QLD destinations that can easily be $300+ from Melbourne.
