so has the OP actually contacted VA with their 'concern'??? would be interesting to hear the VA response if they did

Nah.. couldn't be bothered. I wanted to share it here mainly as I was interested to compare what others have experienced, and whether this was a common approach on VA, seeing I've never heard it before, and was fully aware the potential wide-variety of responses, reactions and perspectives of people on the forum.

Additionally, I figured if the company rep happened to see this thread and felt strongly enough about the issue, they'd pick it up and provide appropriate feedback into their company should they wish. It's been the case that I've previously received a direct response from VA about "feedback" after posting on this forum. I don't expect that to occur. It's just what happened in that case.

And besides, I'd like to think that I've learnt to realise that I'm not privy to all factors, situations, circumstances and nuances of each particular flight to assume that this announcement wasn't appropriate, and nor do I need to be. I've never heard it before, and, as I indicated in my OP was amused and found it contradictory to other announcements made which demonstrate a desire to provide satisfactory customer service. What's that saying? "Such is life..."

I've noticed what an easy job the CSM has on most flights I do with a few pax in J. The only time I can recall pushing the call button for myself (in over a thousand flights) was last week when I wanted to ask if the much-vaunted wifi was actually switched on. I was in row 4. The CSM spent an extra 25 minutes serving the meals and wine to the four pax and then finally came to see me. The other two FAs were very slowly getting to the back of the plane with the trolley. The CSM professed not to know much about it but said he'd "check with the boys" (is that the pilot and FO?) and get back to me. I suggested seeing if it was working for anyone else which he agreed to and then disappeared down the back and I didn't see him again. But that's all irrelevant to this discussion.

Does anyone remember the old days of DJ when pax were so accustomed to getting free food and drink on QF and Ansett that hardly anyone would buy anything and they didn't offer any freebies? The cabin service used to take about ten minutes and the crew would just hide down the back for the rest of the flight. It's a bit different now. People willingly part with their hard-earned for the sort of food you would never eat near sea level. I can proudly say I've never bought anything on a flight except for one time on DeathStar where our company gave us a $10 voucher. On that occasion (we were going to Hamilton Is for a conference) they ran out of food by about halfway down the plane!

Who put the [...] section in the thread title? Was it the OP?

No per se objection here, just curious. That said, I suppose some people will find it some combination of endearing, jocular and pejorative....

Jocular for me. I'm not overly concerned by one announcement (who knows, perhaps one was feeling a bit off colour) so it's more a bit of a chuckle as to how VA can next prove they still don't quite get it (said nicely by me BTW) :D

Yeah, I did, as I wanted to convey that it wasn't said, but it was one possible interpretation of the meaning, and intentionally slightly offensive while attempting some form of humour. As swanning_it, another demonstration that they possibly don't get it.

Don't worry - the Daily Terrorgraph readers here are used to that sort of editorial license ..... and they like it!

Bigbadbyrnes asked about the E190 in business class.
I had one opportunity to get Mrscove on Virgin coming back from the AFL grand final. It may be quite a while before I get a second chance (maybe a decade) to do another Virgin flight unless Qantas breaks down somehow.
That leaves me with myself and my sons available as product testers but it won't be on the E190.
