I haven't done the phone up booking yet, J leading onto F trans Tasman.
That might be the thing for Dec this year.
Its not so much the overnight thing, I think its more like QF's online booking system cannot deal with an J service linking onto an F service for that sector we have in mind.
If I did it as J, its possible, either with QF or with EK metal but QF flight number, I did J CHC - SYD - ADL in one booking PNR in 2014 or last year.

I am a larger sized, (fat, more so obese, lazy working pooch), so need that space next to me.
Thats why I fly QF more so than VA, get more shadow with QF than stuffed like a sardine with VA. I have been stuffed with QF in whY too, with no space to move trans Tasman, but find more shadow available with QF than VA.
I have flown trans Tasman with comfort seat booking and also in J and now F.

Yes the QF online booking engine is poor. Right now it's worse than poor with seemingly simple sectors returning database errors, but it definitely has been possible to purchase trans tasnman J and F combination fares online. I've booked and flown it.

Also note that you can always use an online travel agent (OTA) such as Webjet, travel.com.au, Wotif etc to book these things - they will still issue via QF 081 stock. Only potential reasons one would not do that would be if a QF voucher was being used, or one wanted a direct QF transaction for things like CC bonus points. qantas.com is not the only place to book these fares online if the phone is scary.

Oh I give up with shadows.

Thanks for the Webjet idea, will give it a try, will put my Flybuys card number onto the booking.
Will play around after Jul.
