I have to agree with the tax issue. If they haven't paid the tax to the ATO surely they must refund it.

They're collecting on behalf of the govt not themselves.

There is no requirement or obligation to refund it under contract law, and indeed no requirement to even pay the GST, as ruled by the Federal Court in the case of QF : Qantas Airways Limited v Commissioner of Taxation [2011] FCAFC 113, the Full Federal Court (Stone, Edmonds and Perram JJ) has handed down a landmark decision in favour of the taxpayer Qantas Airways Limited (Qantas), finding that no GST was payable on domestic airfares where the passenger paid the fare, but either cancelled the reservation or did not show up for the flight, and no refund was available or claimed.

Taxes collected as part of any airfares are pretty trivial anyway (in fact are any "taxes" at all actually collected at all on international fares in the sense of payments to ATO?) The closest would have to bee Australian government imposed passenger movement charge collected by customs - everything else is some form of fee that is masquerading as a tax - either a surcharge that goes to airport operator (not the government) or the airline etc (the big one being the fuel surcharges). So payments to ATO are pretty much irrelevant when it comes to international airfares.

I do wonder if "taxes" also include the fuel surcharge.

When looking atthe "taxes" charged for Y reward bookings there has to be some gouging by the airlines because the taxes don't add up to $300+ for a o/w flight between Australia and Asia.

Still, the T&Cs are what they are. Depending on what kind of travel insurance you have and the cause of the cancellation, you may get some compensation that way.

Maybe if enough claims are made against a certain FF scheme insurers will stop covering them and bring the issue out into the general public.

Perhaps. I wouldn't hold my breath. So long as the practise is actually legal I wouldn't expect anything except good honest competition to add value to customers lives.

There are many things about VAi that leave me pretty cold and I've yet to use them ... which is a form of voting with my wallet. As there are plenty of opportunities to spend VFF points with domestic fares and international partners I prefer to sidestep VAi.
