My approach yesterday for wife plus 2 kids SYD - LAX VA1/VA2 return ticket.

Saver over and flexi back. Before purchasing, searched award availability. Purchased the tix and contacted the call centre straight away to book the upgrade LAX - SYD x 3 in P/E using my points. ( Could not do it online as I was not a passenger )

The challenge was to book 3 x P/E upgrades for family using my points where I was not on the same flight departing LAX. I was told after the process that the person with status should be on the same flight to upgrade other people in the traveling party.

Anyway, got it across the line with a very very helpful call centre employee. 5 mins and new confirmation emailed. It was great service

BTW, I cannot see in the T&C where the passenger with status must be on the flight.
