Postcode when buying petrol

00000 is normally what I use at the service stations. As discussed earlier, some stations don't require it when you swipe your card (Shell didn't with my Amex).

90210 is my backup for anything US postcode related.

American cards I believe have a fraud verification technology where the postcode can be used as part of checking the validity of a transaction. I believe the technology doesn't work with Australian cards and the postcode can't be checked correctly.

The postcode requirement is a lot less intrusive than the system they used in the 1980's. Back then some merchants would ask for your phone number. It was a different world back then so I sometimes gave mine. The difference in number of digits didn't seem to worry the system. It probably accepted 614 as the first three digits of number (614) 9xx_xx_.

The one that used to get me is rental car forms etc. only accepting a two character state abbreviation. I just used to put NS :)
