Hi all,

I recently had an unfortunate incident on a VA domestic flight and I was hoping to share my experience and would be interested to see if anyone had been in a similar situation.

During a recent trip to Sydney, I discovered that my checked baggage had been tampered with and an item of material personal and monetary value was missing. The item, concealed and packed inside a bag within the luggage, was there before I checked it in at VA's counter at Adelaide airport. I retrieved my luggage as soon as it arrived on the carousel. There was no external damage, no other lost items in luggage and the zipper was securely fastened, albeit at a slightly different position than I remembered. It seems impossible that the bag containing the item dropped out by itself. I contacted VA's baggage claims team, and they told me that they've checked with the airports and didn't find anything that had come loose. Given the circumstances and their responses to date, I'm led to believe that someone may have interfered with my baggage at airside.

I've heard about tampered luggage and item thefts in airports all around the world, but I didn't think it'd happen on a domestic trip in Australia. This is especially surprising given how stringent ASIC/VA have been with vetting and security measures. In my 20yrs of travel experience, both domestically and internationally, I've never had my luggage tampered with, let alone an item stolen from within the luggage (perhaps I've just been extremely lucky until now).

So far, I've contacted VA, provided a stat declaration, and submitted a theft report with the AFP. VA has been responsive and assured me they're following their protocols, but I've yet to hear about any potential investigation (if any are forthcoming).

In all likelihood, I won't recover the item or receive any compensation, but I'd be interested in hearing from others who might have had similar experiences. I did a quick search online - forum posts and news in the AU media about similar incidents seem to primarily involve other (usually developing) countries, or theft of entire luggages from carousels"

Also, I'm aware that theft and more serious crimes occur all the time, including in supposed secure areas and sometimes little can be done after the fact. It just pains me to think that if this is indeed an incident of theft, the individual responsible might continue to operate with impunity, and the lack of any consequence could embolden them to offend in the future

Firstly so sorry for your loss and experience.

Out of interest (and absolutely not victim blaming) did you have a lock on your luggage?

Has VA2 indicated what compensation they will be paying yet?

The OP indicated a zipper. No point locking a bag with a zipper. You can just stick a biro straight through the zip and it opens right up.

Can it then be done up again with no signs it was opened.
Yeah. Just zip it up again. So long as there's no damage to the teeth, the thingum zips it back up nicely. Besides, even if it doesn't, they won't really care that much.

Tbh I don't see why a baggage handler would even be bothered to go through your specific bag and then knowing something valuable was in there and then taking it.
They would be dealing with thousands of bags a day, and just decided to open that bag? Seems unlikely.

Unless your bag wasn't actually closed and by the time the bag went through the sortation system the item has dropped off somewhere.

Are you aware that no other bags were the subject of irregularity reports, that no other bags have allegedly had items removed (or even just interfered with)? "That" bag may have one of several, over the course of that day or longer.

Did I say it was impossible? No.
I said it was unlikely.

I’m sorry that this has happened to you.

Any hints on the nature of the item? Why would it have been a target?

Why would VA or any airline offer compensation?????

a passenger claim something is stolen & an airline is expected to pay compo?

My goodness, evidence ?????
Why would you assume the OP can't produce evidence?
Post automatically merged:

A Stat Dec would go a long way. That's a common mechanism where direct evidence isn't available. I've done it for semi-valuables in lost luggage to satisfy the airline as to value
also purchase receipt. Police report.

What does a purchase receipt prove?
Yeah you bought it and now it's in your closet.....

Stat Dec as legit it may seem, it's just here Mr policeman, please sign this... Yeah no probs.

Still zero evidence an airline employee opened your bag and took your own.

How “big” was the item that was allegedly stolen? It seems very random given it was concealed in your bag and that it was found. Not like it was sonething in a side pocket with easy access. Staff also get randomly checked on the way out of airside. Dumb question - but are you sure you packed it?

The evidence you demand requires proving a few elements - It was owned, it was in the case and it was taken from the case or did not arrive.

Purchase receipt proves they owned the item.
Actually a statutory declaration is an Oath under whichever legislation applies and therefore has the same legal meaning, and potential penalties, as an Oath made before a court. Yes, a stat dec meets the meaning of evidence.

Perhaps brush up on how this stuff works before cynically dismissing it. Actually the cynical dismissal is probably informative.

Police reports - similar there are penalties for providing false information.

Again, the basic question - How do you know the OP cannot provide evidence the item was in their bag?
