It is tragic that people are driven to take such extreme risks. Not being overly familiar with wheel bays myself, I can only assume it would have been 4000mls of freezing temps and little air to breath, so he was likely dead or semi/un conscious and I'm guessing there are no "prepare for landing" announcements made to the wheel bays. Even if the person was alive and conscious, the bay opening would likely come somewhat unexpectedly.

Exactly. I wonder if this stowing away in the wheel well is an urban myth. Even back on the days of propeller-driven aircraft, flying slower and lower, conditions would have been horrendous and space almost zero. Think of the conditions endured by, say, WWII bomber crew: freezing cold and lack of oxygen. And they were heavily dressed and in the coughpit. No one died from that but I recall conditions being described as hellish.
