I read all I could find on the site when my family member tried to get travel insurance for her trip from NZ to Hawaii next week. She tried all those mentioned on this site and was refused by 16 companies as she had had stents placed in her heart earlier this year.

if this is useful to others, today Tower Insurance have agreed to cover her, costing about $400 for 2 weeks. No idea how they respond to a claim but at least now they are able to go on the trip, which didn't seem possible as they called every company in the phone book.

Anyone had experience with Tower? Fingers crossed it was positive....!

One thing it confirms to me, keep travelling while you're healthy as that insurance really becomes an issue once you have any health work done! Las Vegas for Christmas .... Then to somewhere warm. Suggestions?

Re: Pre existing condition health insurance success

Really happy that you found a company that will cover this situation. Thanks for posting the outcome.

Just hope they don't need to test it. I posted a few years ago of our success with the platinum ANZ card insurance, after my partner snapped his Achilles in Peru and we called on the insurance. It was brilliant, in spite of people being sceptical. Anyway, lets hope Tower will be just as good SHOULD it be needed.......

I recently got insurance through Covermore for my 22yo daughter who was diagnosed with a blood clot in her brain a couple of months ago. She's going to be under regular care for years, but it's kind of ironic that if this had happened a couple of months earlier when she was studying in the US and covered under normal travel insurance, it would have cost the insurance company sooooooo much more had it happened then. Given that she's on medication and under constant medical supervision, it is so less likely that she will need the insurance, and yet it costs much more.

You just never know when, how and why these things happen, but always better to be covered in any event.

I am an advocate of the principle that travel insurance should be mandatory for everyone, and accept additional premium costs when the traveller is at higher risk for health or by choice of sporting/recreational reasons.

Re: Pre existing condition health insurance success

An awful thing for such a young woman but terrific to hear she is well enough to travel again. I passed on Covermore having read about it on here but apparently they wouldn't cover her either. As you suggest, you might think having stents would lower her risk, compared to earlier in the year when she didnt even know she had a problem!

I had success with cover more as we'll for my elderly parents last year, blocked by over 10 insurers but cover more came to the party at a price and with some conditions. My father previous heart attacks and a stroke so was on blood thinners. You need to get on the phone and stay away from online applications with more complex requests.
