I am looking at pre paying a car rental for a 10 day period in the USA to lock in the high AUD.

I see that US citizens can get a 10-15% discount by doing this with usually minimal fee for cancellation or change to the booking. This does not apply to Australians applying from here.

Are you aware of any ways of prepaying a USA rental from Australia ?

ozflier, along similar lines to obtaining insurance when hiring a car in the US, the only two ways Aussies can 'lock in' the rate, are:

1. Book through the UK based websites of the major car hire companies (e,.g. Avis, Dollar, Thrifty) which provide packaged rates including all insurances;

2. Book through third party consolidators/aggregators/brokers, which also provide packaged rates including all insurances. Members on this forum recommend the likes of argus, driveaway holidays, netflights and others.

The majority of the above require payment at the time of booking, thereby locking in the rate.

As far as I am aware, it is not possible for Aussies to prepay when hiring direct through the likes of Hertz, unlike what they offer US residents.

I concur with AdMEL. I have used driveaway three times and now Netflights, all out of Seattle and have no problems with either. The rates were good, all insurances were included but you have to watch when you collect the vehicle as they will do their best to sell you more insurance that you don't need.
