Thinking of buying two premium economy seats SYD/LAX/SYD for wife and self going mid July, what percentage chance would there be of using QFF points to upgrade to J ?, we are both QFF members (lowly bronze) and I'm in Q Club if that helps any.

I would think very small. No status, so behind all those with status above you. And not that far away.

Someone with EF access may be able to shed more light with the buckets available?

The day of the week can make a difference. More paid busines on weekends so people get to LAX - where ever for a Monday
And buy a lotto ticket. You may have more chance of winning !

In the past 18 months, I've received 4 out of 5 point upgrades SYD-LAX (or vice-versa) - 3 discY to Y+ and 1 discY to J - the first 2 as a NB, the rest as PS or SG (I can't remember which). All were on QF11 or QF12 (A380) and from memory 2 were lodged at T-10, and the other 2 a month out. I usually fly ex-Syd on Tues, and ex-LAX on Fri.

So, there is a chance...

Just got upgrades for Mrs and myself MEL-LAX, on a Tuesday. All 40 seats on a 747-400 were filled, so it was pretty tight.
But ... very disappointing. Apart from the legroom, which was fine with me because I am 1m90, service was cough, food was just barely better than Economy (which we flew on the way home) and the overall experience was not that great.
In future, I will try to save upgrades for Business.
I would consider spending a few bucks on a decent food basket and flying Economy, unless you really need the room -- then you can pay for an exit row.
