Premium Y - LAX to SYD

Just booked a US trip, leaving in 3 weeks.

On checking my booking tonight I discovered the option was available to upgrade to premium economy, which was a surprise as I didn't think that was available on this route.

I'm on the 380 outbound, so happy to sample Y for the first time on that, but what should I do on the return trip? 45000 points for Premium Y upgrade, or 72,000 for J? Is Premium Y worth the points, or better to spend the 27,000 extra and go upstairs?

It is surely related to teh number of points that you have.

Personally if I had say 80K points I would try to upgrade to Y+ both ways rather than Y one way and J the other.

However if I had a million points it would be straight to J both ways.

When you upgrade now on a flight with a Prem Y cabin, I think you tick both boxes - ie you ask for business and prem Y and they will give you business if there is a seat and if not try and squeeze you into prem Y.

My philosophy with upgrades is that whenever I'm in Y, I request an upgrade out of that class!

I was about to ask a similar Qn re Premium Y on SNG-LHR-SNG. I have an upgradeable Y booking and my only experience of Premium Y was on BA transatlantic (OK, I suppose). It appears that both Premium Y and Business are available...

Can anyone comment on the reclinability (very important) and legroom (less important)?

Purely off the seat maps, I would be chasing 34JK, 34AB or 38JK followed by any other AB/JK combination.

I flew Premium Economy for the first time on QF2 the other day. It's a fantastic option. I think it's much closer to J than it is to Y. I'll put up a trip report on it this week as it doesn't look as though anyone has reported on it here yet(?).

There was some suggestion on here that waitlisting for a J upgrade would result in going into the Premium Economy waitlist pool if you failed on the J allocation. If someone can confirm this then perhaps it's a good option as it maximises your chances of avoiding Y?

By the way, are you on the A380 on the way back too? I flew J on it on the delivery flight and it's fantastic, with the new generation Skybeds and a very roomy J cabin. If it is, then J for sure.

That's an excellent option. It's worth noting though that Y+ is selling very well apparently so there might be more chance of finding a J seat than a Y+ seat on points..

There are 72 seats in J compared to 32 in Y+ so guess based on numbers, J could be easier to upgrade to

And the points-price differential isn't too bad when compared with the big difference in seat reclinability and legroom. On the SNG-LHR leg for which I've requested an upgrade, the Y+ is 35,000# and J is 56,000. If only I'd clicked back over into Platinum this year ... my chances would be even better.

Premium Y and J are both upstairs on the 380

You're dead right. Getting off the A380 and onto a 747 back to LHR made the Boeing's fit-out seem so dated and aged in comparison. Of course it's not, it's just going from a brand-spanking new plane to one that's been around for who knows how long that certainly gives that impression.

Anyhow, I think you'll be really happy with Y+ if you get it.
