There used to be a thread on here about how to prevent AA miles from expiry but can't find it now. What is the latest feeling now you can't use the awardwallet hack. I know you can donate 1000 miles but dont really want to lose miles.

Has anyone had any luck using the shopping site, i.e. is there anything you can get on there that is actually of use in Oz (or alternately so cheap it doesn't matter)?

This is a thread but not sure how many are still viable

Transfer a small number of points from another program such as Marriott Bonvoy if you have an account in another program that can transfer.

Not sure what type of Amex card you have than can transfer directly to AAdvantage?? Mine needs to launder the points through another program such as Marriott Bonvoy.

Diners Club used to transfer directly to AAdvantage. Not sure if that is still an option for the few people who still have Diners Club cards.

Oops...forgot it has to go via Marriott Bonvoy!

I just logged into my AA account for the first time in 3 years and was offered to buy them back.
Only 1000 points so I didnt care when they expired in Covid.

Just bumping this. I think last time I went to Award wallet and made a comment on the AA forum but I can't find the AA forum on there - am I missing something.

Any other suggestions - no hotel or hire car plans in the future before they expire

The Award wallet option disappeared a few years ago unfortunately.

Fight redemption also resets the expiry date

e-Rewards is one way but we have 2 AAdvantage accounts and I don't want to do double the surveys.
Fair enough but it’s not like there are 100s of alternatives these days. They have decreased the transfer fee considerably so this is one option to keep two accounts active.

Was going to say this. It was 5 points per day or something just for commenting, when I realised it reset my expiry date I was all over it, as I has around 60k dormant at the time, but I've used them now. But the bump is timely, as I have ~3k due to expire in around 2 months, not much but I still don't want to let them go 🤣.

I have purchased AA miles before too, when it's worked out well for a redemption, but have no plans to do that any time soon. I know purchasing 1k points would do the job, but it's a fair but to spend to save a low amount, to save the 60k I'd have done it without a second thought.

Purchasing 1,000 points (the minimum) might be the only easy way from here.

AA eShopping offers a credit for many vendors (much like the Qantas Marketplace purchases). Just be sure not to apply any discounts or coupons on the purchase -- else you may earn no points. You could also buy an Apple gift card online with digital delivery... American Airlines AAdvantage eShopping: Shop Online & Earn Miles

Otherwise, the AA dining programme is also an easy way to get a few points to keep things alive... https://www.aa.com/web/i18n/aadvantage-program/earn-miles/shopping-dining.html

This is a good point, if the points post quickly enough. Not sure if AA have a hotel program, AS do and I used them a few times to keep a balance alive (originated with the 10K that all VX members were given when they were bought out, kept it going until I eventually got it to 30K and J HKG-MEL, excellent value while it lasts).

Re gift cards, you'd want to be careful that you can use them - purchasing from the AA site would presumably sell USD gift cards? I'm pretty sure USD Amazon and Apple gift cards can only be used in their respective country's stores, which may or may not be an issue.

That's what I thought. I have a friend in LA - I'm thinking I might order her something from her local CVS and get her to pick it up
