Problems attaching images

I'm having some issues attaching images to posts. Receiving error messages saying the file is too big, but there doesn't appear to be any consistency in when it's coming up - I have images > 2MB that are attaching fine, but then others that are < 1MB are coming up with the error.

Just encountered the same issue here trying to upload a ~3MB mage which I have never had any issues with previously. Resized it so it was < 2MB and still got the same error. Not sure if anything has changed in the forum configuration around uploads that could be causing this?

Should have been OK. Notwithstanding, you can reduce file size within the AFF upload process too - did you try that?

+1 been having this issue for a couple of months. Have been resizing down to 1200px on the long edge and had no issues, but it is a little annoying!

AFF is not Flickr, I'm not terribly invested in increasing the size limits to something so large that members will be posting huge images to threads. Storage costs money, bandwidth costs money.

I don’t recall asking for the size limits to be increased, nor do I particularly appreciate the cold response after three weeks. I was simply asking to understand the inconsistencies, as I hadn’t been able to decipher them while attaching my images to a TR. Don’t worry about it - perhaps my first and last TR.

Is this limit a recent change, or perhaps previously there was a server side resizing/compression process which has now been turned off?

I can understand the rationale for not wanting users uploading 50MP photos, but at the same time, server side recompression would be a happy medium and incredibly helpful when posting from mobile.

I'm surprised the forum software doesn't provide any sort of user facing error handling when attaching >1200px images. Oversized images seemingly upload successfully, but sit as blank squares on a post that can't be attached. I'm surprised there isn't at least a message that communicates the sizing constraints.

This may not fix the pixel size issue, but the way to reduce a file size while uploading, on a phone, is this.

1. Click attach files, as usual, choose 'photo library' as usual

2. Instead of now clicking 'Add', see down the bottom, and click/touch 'show selected'. I have only 1 chosen here but of course you may insert up to 10 images per post.

3. When you do, you'll get a menu of file sizes to select - original, down to small. I usually choose large. This is a really handy feature when your bandwidth is limited.

4. Select the file size you want and it will show your selection. Then select done at the top.

5. The select 'add' at the top.

Can't see how to do it on a laptop, sorry.

@support Is there any chance of a response on this?

Not being able to post an photo directly from an Android phone (without resizing them one-by-one through a third party app) is very frustrating and discourages posting at all. Is there any chance the limit can be amended for paid AFF users?

This wasn't an issue for many years and only started happening in mid 2023.

@sudoer I am able to attach photos to my AFF posts directly from my android phone without resizing first, so I am not sure your problem is specifically an Android issue.

Using the insert image icon seems to work better than just simply copying and pasting directly into a post. The only limit I seem to hit is wrt the number of images allowed in a single post.

You're right - it's not an Android issue. The actual problem is that AFF is configured to refuse image uploads greater than 1200 x 1000px.

I can replicate the behaviour other mobile and desktop operating systems - the difference is that it's easier to batch-resize on other platforms. In this sense, AFF's configuration is most problematic on Android.

The problem existed on both my Pixel 5 and Pixel 8 so it's not an issue with new hardware (not that the Pixel 8 camera is particularly high resolution being only 12MP). I had posted many photos from my Pixel 5 over the last few years, then it stopped working sometime in 2023.

@Lynda2475 are you able to share what phone and operating system you're using, and whether you're shooting photos in the native camera resolution?

Using the insert image icon seems to work better than just simply copying and pasting directly into a post.

The insert image icon and then selecting the photo via Android media picker doesn't work, I get this generic error:

The attach file button allows me a upload an image, but never generates the thumbnail or provides insert buttons:

I have a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5g (so nothing very new) and use the default camera app. I have never changed any of the settings (other than picture mode i.e. night, potrait, food etc) so images are saved at default size.

I just click on the icon

Click here, then select from Gallery (can only do 1 at a time)

And then pic appears as below

** @sudoer ETA that It does appear as though some auto compression happens. The original image on my phone is 4.17MB dimensions 3024 *4032 shot using12MP ISO 40.

But when I download this pic from this post back to my laptop the files is only 200kb.

Thanks for the info. If you find that same picture in your camera roll and view details/image info, what are the dimensions?

Are you using Google Chrome or the Samsung browser?

We cross posted updates. I use Chrome exclusively, the Samsung browser is rubbish.

I changed my photos default from 3:4 to Full, took the below, but realised this reduced the quality and size, so am setting back to 3:4 per the original one above.

FYI this shot in "full mode" is 2.73 MB 1816 x4032 7MP.

Ive had issues with Pixel7P images. The instant i "edit" and resave the photo even if dimensions aren't changed, it appears fine.

Maybe its something to do with pixel native image and sizes.

Hello everyone,

We have some good news for you! We have increased the maximum attachment size from 1000 KB to 20,000 KB. This means you can now upload and share larger and higher quality photos on our forum. You can still attach up to 10 images per message, and we have also disabled the width and height limitations, so you don't have to worry about resizing your photos.

We look forward to seeing your amazing photos. Please let us know if you have any questions or feedback.
