A few years ago (pre JQ, but post AN collapse) when Qantas used to have significant sales I used to take advantage of the sales and took a number of unplanned trips. I can remember scoring flights MEL-SYD-CFS for $180 return, MEL-BNE-ROK for $240 return, MEL-PER return for $260 and MEL-CHC return for $260. Today, the discounts QF offer are not significant enough for me to drive such extra travel, and I often find sale fares are not available around weekends.

My experience with sales fares suggests generally good availability in one of the directions, but not so good the other way.

Sounds like arranging travel for the Mother-in-law

SOunds like they are on to you :)

You have to work with what you are given. What I am more annoyed about is the farce of reduced fuel surcharge. Didn't take very long at all and fares back up to where they were before.

I would be very happy to see the fuel surcharges completely removed and the fares increased by exactly the same amount. I have no issue at all with an increase in the fares because the cost of delivering the service has increase, but hiding it as they do in surcharges is outright deceptive in my opinion.

Agree about deceptive. But the change was also deceptive since QF trumpeted cutting surcharge, reducing the cost of flights. That is factually correct, for about 2 weeks.
