I have the 450 Qantas travel credit to use on my AMEX QF ultimate card.

Does anyone know if there's any issues if I were to redeem the credit on flights and then cancel the card before the travel is due to start?

Looking to rationalise cards and hunt for other bonus sign-ups and I've had the AMEX for the longest.

I was searching to see has anyone done this lately as I'm about to do it.

Did you have success Yaksha?

Hi All,
I did a search but apologies if these questions have been answered.

1) Can I use the free Qantas Club Lounge invitations as part of my card for the Lounges in Dubai or if this just domestic?

2) Interested to hear people's thoughts on the AMEX insurance and if people have had any dramas using it or if most people opt for additional 3rd party insurance. Obviously everyone's situation is different but just keen to see if people have had issues in the past.

Thanks in advance!

1. Qantas does not have a lounge in DXB, so no.

2. Have not need to use it so can’t assist with this one.

Thanks for the response.

Sorry to clarify I'm planning to fly emirates, Qantas codeshare. I believe Emirates have business and first class lounges in Dubai but not sure if I need to be a specific Qantas flyer member or fly business class
(https://www.qantas.com/au/en/qantas...ounge-access-eligibility.html#partner-lounges).
Qantas doesn’t operate a lounge in DXB and the link you’ve posted makes clear the answer to your original question:

“Partner lounges are operated by, or on behalf of, other airlines at selected ports to which Qantas operates. Associated lounges may only be open to Qantas members two hours before Qantas departures. The use of complimentary invitations is not permitted in Associated lounges.”

A J ticket, or QP membership would get you in, but a Qantas lounge pass from your credit card will not.

I haven't had to claim on amex (via chubb last time I held the card?) But it has been a part of a repertoire of cc insurances I've had in my back pocket in the past.

On reviewing it's t&c's against other credit card programs I have held, there have been notable eligibility nuances and inclusion differences eg. Some you have to book the entire return flight to be eligible, some only the outbound. Some included cover for additional expenses for domestic travel, others didn't.

The PDS should be publicly available so I encourage you to download it to read about what's included and not to see if it has the cover you need for the trip.

Have a search of the forums here. There's been threads sharing experiences with credit card-issued travel insurance before, especially in the COVID era.

Does anyone know if purchasing a Qantas flight directly from qantas.com.au with a supplementary card, "activate" the 2x complimentary lounge passes or if the purchase must be made with the primary cardholder?

Just received the following email from Amex for my Qantas Ultimate Card, appears the changes are going through the whole product line.

Drawing particular attention to Qantas points earned in all categories of spend contribute to 100k Qantas points limit. I understand this as the earn rate for QF purchases is 2.25 points per $, while the earn rate for this spend does not change after 100k points, it will contribute to the limit for other spend. So it would make sense to do all Qantas spending after hitting the threshold instead of prior.

While Amex highlight I don't earn 100k points anyway (I haven't had the card for 12 months yet so we will see) knowing there is a chance of hitting the cap concerns me. I've been on the fence for a long time to switching to Platinum Charge (despite its also devaluations) after some consideration I might look at changing to that or switching to one of the Qantas Money cards. As not being limited to Amex places would be a nice change. Either way, points from card spend is certainly not what it use to be.

Yes this isn't great, but at least bonus points don't contribute to the cap.

I have multiple earning cards, so if I reach the cap will look to preference other cards if the earn rate is higher from that point on.

Noting however that many of the bank issued rewards cards cap or reduce earn at the much lower 5k per month level; so comparatively speaking this remains one of the best earning cards for regular spend.

The great credit card points devaluation continues.

To be fair to Amex, this is one of the least worst changes. The gutting of sign-up bonuses is far worse in my opinion. My last Qantas Ultimate gave me 130K points in 2022. Current offer is 75K.

Interesting. I don't have that 4th point in my email about not being impacted so I guess they worked out my annual points earnings exceed that. It's certainly another slice in the thousand cut death of AMEX's value

Yeah the value of AMEX is really going down hill. Across all cards. Even the platinum charge is a shadow of what it once was. I get it, they don't make the money they use to due to interchange fees changes which use to pay for benefits but come on. I think they are taking the piss now. If they are really that tight I'd rather an increase to the annual fee than the cut of benefits we have. Note to amex employee reading: no, not an annual fee increase AS well to these changes, I mean prior to the cuts the cards have had over the last few years.

I got the same email. Unfortunately nothing much on the market comes close to the Amex earn rate for Qantas

Isn't this is Turnbull's fault for the interchange fees changes

Enjoy it while it lasts. Given the trend towards cashless payments, I'd expect to see another RBA "review" of interchange fees in a few years, leading to a further reduction, and even lower points earn rates.

How long have you held the Amex Ultimate? As a long-term member I reckon churners are getting better rewards than loyal customers.
