QANTAS announces direct BNE-ORD / BNE-SFO

It doesn’t look like Qantas has added any new codeshare flights ex ORD yet.

I was thinking you can now fly one stop to LGA via ORD but alas, I don’t see any new flights added.

Yes!. LGA vs JFK is compelling for 1 stopper pax or even avoiding NY and head into BOS.
Though I’m not sure if SYD-BNE-ORD-LGA will be more compelling than SYD-LAX-JFK

Is MEL-SFO being retimed as part of this? My March flight on a Thursday has been cancelled.

Should be good for points availability. I've had to go SYD-SFO instead of BNE-LAX before just to get the seats. Having BNE-SFO should make it easier to get to West Coast USA on points.

Great news (pending the hopefully soon finally approved JV with AA)!

QFi continues its expansion. If only PER airport weren’t so corrupt and hopeless they would have Joburg and also Paris in the works :(. But two new US routes from outside of Syd is awesome news!

Did you know that AU tax payers own 30% of [Perth airport through The future fund!

No but SYD-BNE-ORD-BOS is probably better than SYD-LAX-JFK-BOS. Especially considering how much AA is reducing its flights at JFK.

But surely you’d go LAX-BOS not LAX-JFK-BOS?

Sure, it avoids LAX but it;s still one more connection. And ORD isn’t the worlds greatest airport to connect at (hello ground taxiing times.....)

You are sort of right. There are more flights to BOS from ORD than JFK.

But if destination is NYC, I think a 1 stop to JFK is better than a 2 stop to LGA (for 2 stoppers)

BNE originating passengers might prefer a 1 stop into LGA via ORD over a 1 stop into JFK via LAX. Except that the final sector will be a 737-800 - for Y passengers that might be better than Y in a 787

@docjames you are correct. I like it when the transcontinental AA flights are in the stretch A321.

Connections via AA into YYZ/YUL will be impossible or very difficult at that arrival time. There is only one AA connection to YYZ

Because of the AA hub at DFW, I dont think there will be many onward connections/codeshares on AA from ORD.

It will be a very late arrival to connecting destination anyway as the QF85 arrives at 1640 (which is about the same time as QF11 arrives into JFK). ORD is not a quick airport for connections. Likely any connecting flights will need to depart after 1900hrs.

An earlier arrival into ORD would have been better.

This excludes most of Canada as there is only one reasonably timed flight into Canada and its only YYZ.
LGA will be the big one. Then maybe BOS, PHL, IAD, MSP. Im sure there will be others - at least east of ORD.
South and west of ORD it may be better going via SYD on QF11/QF7

QF85 would arrive in ORD 1 hour after QF11 arrives at JFK (assuming 11 is on time). Both have 1640 arrivals, ORD is an hour behind JFK.
The general I-D min connect time at ORD is 1.30, with some combinations needing 2 hours.
There are a lot of connections available on AA after the 85 arrival, but most of them are better served via LAX or DFW

Thanks @Himeno for the time zone connection.

QF hints at the inbound traffic as a driver for this route.
While there are AA Dom onward connections the arrival at final destination would be later than via DFW or LAX.

I was actually hoping for connections into Canada from ORD but the late arrival cuts that.

just realised QF are increasing BNE/LAX nonstop from 10/week at start of DEC to 13/week for all of JAN, but are having a bit of trouble filling the QF55 evening flights out of BNE at 2035

Not surprising because it’s arriving at 1605 LAX
Most people want to get to their finals earlier and perhaps too many seats being offered even during the peak period??

MEL-SFO will operate Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays once BNE-SFO starts.

Interesting as that route has been very well patronised especially up front... I wonder when they will have the aircraft to return the frequency.

School holidays during that period, I'm guessing the spare 789 (which is normally SYD based) may be used for a bit of "low yielding" seasonal holiday work out of BNE before the 789s are used on SYD based work.
