Qantas announces intention to acquire the remaining 80% of Alliance (ASX:AQZ)

When they signed the contract, which was after preliminary concerns raised by the ACCC, they already knew it was unlikely to go through, the legal team at QF aren't naive, they are a well oiled machine in respect to mergers and acquisitions.
Buying Alliance would have allowed to them to wet lease to Virgin and others, as Alliance do now, a completely different business model.
A lot of airlines prefer to lease or wet lease some of their aircraft, it can be much better for the books.
Except QF said they had no intention to do so.

Qantas has stated it will not continue Alliance’s current leasing arrangements with rival airlines post-acquisition.

With the ACCC dealt its first major blow in years with its ANZ-Suncorp decision being ruled invalid, I wonder whether it’s time for Qantas to reignite merger talks with Alliance Airlines and face the competition watchdog once again and emerge successful. Unlike ANZ, Qantas was too weak to fight the ACCC, but the opinion piece in The Australian above provides fresh perspective on the ACCC’s path forward in the light of this major overruling concerning this merger and the banking industry.

The truth is Alliance is so integrated and associated with QF that it is destined to eventually be folded into Qantas wether people like it or not; it’s a matter of when, not if.

Alliance currently provides the bulk of the F100 and F70 to Virgin Australia under a wet lease agreement for their Regional Queensland services atm.
