Qantas Award Charges Outrageous

I fell off my chair when I searched ATH-DXB-BNE award flight and saw 51200 QFF points + GBP256.90 for the privilege or ~AUD485. I'm sure the outrageous fuel surcharges were much lower when I was searching 7 months ago.

Also BKK-HKG//ATH-DXB-BNE is 63200 QFF points + THB3995 or ~AUD190 which is a huge difference on thr fuel surcharges.

I'm struggling to understand why these fuel surcharges are that high. I have lost interest in accumulating QFF points and trying to bring my balance down as devaluation is inevitable.

We just had a devaluation! So hopefully another 24 months before anything new :(

Wasn't that devaluation for premium cabins only?

There was supposed to be mainly good news for economy award flights with reduction in points and relaxing some fuel surcharges.

Yes, some surcharges for ex Oz economy redemption bookings were reduced. In fact QF's economy YQ is less than VA's in transapacific economy.

I'd still book on AA transpacific if in economy as the points and taxes are the same as with QF but no YQ is assessed. (Also, AA treat oneworld statused PAX in economy much better for seating.)

I’m cutting qantas loose as they are not to be trusted. Their arrogance and incompetence will be their undoing. I’ve switched my earning to flybuys and velocity.

@serfty there's still no real explanation why fuel surcharges for a simple ATH-DXB-BNE economy award are so high but then reduce by more than half after adding a short sector at the beginning.

I wonder if possible to get the fuel surcharge down further with a sector commencing elsewhere.

It could be 'fuel dumps' or simply different markets.

e.g. In repect of markets:

Economy +++ for LHR-xSIN-MEL in on QF is £206 ($388) of which YQ is £68 ($130) while +++ for MEL-xSIN-LHR is $239 of which YQ is $140. (That UK APD is a doozy)

Economy +++ for LAX-MEL in on QF is USD80 ($115) of which YQ is USD40 ($57) while +++ for MEL-LAX is $223 of which YQ is $86.

By way of example, the surcharge was reduced from $338.17 to $237.22 for QF23, SYD-BKK, in J.
Points cost increased from 60,000 to 68,400.
