Qantas axes inflight internet

Sorry if I upset people, but in my circumstance where I work in Australia and live in the USA, getting the emails out of the way on the trip over is a good thing. It means after I get home rather than "catching up" on emails I can spend very very precious time with my wife and all I lost was watching a movie or two on the plane. I understand "ME" time I just prefer to manipulate as much technology as possible to increase my "ME" time when I am working from home.
The speeds didn't bother me as I really only used it for email and had no problems receiving the emails and spreadsheets I needed. Just for reference I paid for the internet out of my pocket and never expensed it to my employer as it was that much of a benefit to me. Also the last time it worked on a flight I was on, the girl sitting close to me when she realized that I was using the internet shortly before landing, complained that had she known it was on the flight she would have used it, but on that flight no announcement was made about the availability. I was using just because I had got used to it.

One route since Dec 10 is a little different from "all flights for some time".

AirNZ don't have any Satellite based in-flight internet service for passengers.

Nor do they permit in-flight WiFi.

The only service they have is on their domestic flights with a Picocel set up with their newer 320's using 3G - limited to Vodaphone NZ and "On-Air" customers. (Also, costs of NZ$20 per MB may deter some.)

Which has been quietly axed over the past few months, apparently due to low usage.

At those costs i'm not surprised.

Working in the Mobile industry, I appreciate the costs associated with providing the service (I'm from an Internet background, and worked for one of the first companies to bring Satellite Wholesale Internet into Perth), but at the price QF were charging, there was no shock there was no interest (same as the Vodafone Pico Cell offering).

Block Skype, VoIP and other 'disruptive' services, and people will pay on longer flights. Like a smoker is hooked on nicotine and needs to bolt outside upon landing in LAX for a quick fa_, I'm the same with my email. In my line of work, a *lot* can happen in 14 hours. Heck I recall boarding a plane in MEL bound for SYD once. Upon landing I turned my phone on. My voicemail was full after we had a major outage (Was when I was working for said Wholesale Bandwidth supplier back in 2000).

There is a huge market, just not at that price.

What happened to their implementation of Aeromobile in 2011 for the 777s, I know they were affected by leaky feeder installation but thought that was solved, maybe they decided it was too expensive as well (which I still maintain is the case and ultimately any services will fail)?
