Qantas boosts international capacity, wet lease Finnair aircraft

Flew this recently in J and have a few thoughts
  • Why can't they just provide the correct mattress pad for the seat?
I would suspect that the QF cleaning supplier in SYD doesn't have the equipment/time to handle the AY mattress. Different wash times, different volumes (with only 2 aircraft) and different repackaging methods = increased costs.

What does AY do at other ports they turn around in?

It's about the volume of each type of item needing to be processed through the commercial cleaners that have the contract with the airline. Adding additional item types, which are different materials, sizes, etc increases costs.
Also to factor in would be if the airline cleans these items at the outstations or if they carry enough for the return on the outbound from the hub.
 
Can I confirm (seem logical, but) that points club attracts status credits on these flights? They are still qantas flights not codeshares right?

Yep, 100% counted as QF flights.

They do have an AY code, but the AY code is the code share, the QF is the main flight number.

I flew QF292 last week (J CR). SCs posted posted next day - as expected.
 
Awesome, doing Syd-BKK CR and BKK - LHR AY Revenue J in May. (J return to London for $3600 and 160k points which is actually bookable)

Will be interesting to compare the QF AYJ to the AY AYJ back to back!

OT, but $3600 BKK-LHR J on AY is a very good fare! I just booked QR CGK-MAD//AMS-CGK J for $4.8k (best OW fare I could find. AY was $7-8k ex SIN/BKK for my dates). But I did easily get QF J SYD-CGK (return CR) as repositioning flights. SYD-SIN is still very difficult to get decent J CR flights..,
 
The Y Comfort seats are the go-to seats for me. They are standard Y seats but have extra leg room and what's a winner for me in that cabin.
Assuming I can select one of the aisle comfort seats at T-80, is it worth taking those or stick with my current selection of 51D/H?

Really up to your personal preference. For me, the front of cabin comfort seats win over bulkhead because I can stuff my small bag under the seat and, if the neighbouring seats happen to be free, you can stretch out. Bulkheads have the annoying habit of fixed armrests which prevent you from sitting sideways, etc (or even sleeping across three seats, if you are lucky).

Since we are talking of these mid-haul flights, I'd go with comfort seats. If it was an overnight long-haul (10-14 h) and a light load, I definitely would try to get a whole 3 or 4 seats to myself for some lie-flat sleep. But I have also done long ones on the comfort seats with seat neighbours and it works ok for me.
 
I just flew the Sydney to Singapore QF291 flight and I was really disappointed with it.
  1. This was a work trip so was booked through the corporate booking platform Navan
  2. No where on Navan did it state the flight was a "non Qantas plane/service" however I've seen screenshots of the Qantas booking system where it does state it's a FinAir operated flight
  3. No where in the Qantas booking management page or boarding ticket did it state it was a FinAir flight
  4. Although the cabin 100% seemed brand new, I felt the economy seat was very small - definitely the actual seat seemed to not be as deep as a normal Qantas international economy seat.
  5. And myself and my colleagues all agreed the isles throughout the whole plane were very narrow. Even walking through business class to disembark we actually angled ourselves slightly so our shoulders wouldn't touch both sides of the business seats
I would have just thought in some of the communication from Qantas it would have mentioned it was a FinAir flight.

I would have just thought in some of the communication from Qantas it would have mentioned it was a FinAir flight.
Blame the previous Irish MD for his fleet mis-management- amongst all his other issues that have destroyed the airline and the brand.
If you're flying to Singapore then they have an infinitely better carrier....

In 4 and 5… the seat pan might be shorter… I guess to give a bit more knee room? On 5, most would argue that’s a good thing…narrower aisles = wider seats. AY say all their economy seats are 18 inches wide, which is standard for most airbus, and more comfortable than 17 or so inches for economy on 787s.
