Qantas Business Class meals & menus

Why- was the meat bad or the taste off or...? Just curious. "Tandoori lamb" would make me excited at first on a short hop on the triangle and it doesn't LOOK too bad either. o_O

Mainly consisted of gristle... and what actual meat was there was very overcooked.

Bah! I understand your disappointment- I hate when Qantas uses cheap cuts of meat for their J class meals... And funnily, a few times now I've had one and the same meal on different flights when once it was awful meat and once it was a perfectly fine cut. Very inconsistent.

QF838 Xmas Eve MEL/DRW (Breakfast Flight)

Pre-takeoff drinks were apple juice and/or water.

Meal was a choice between Bacon, Eggs and Beans, or musli something something. I was starving so opted for the heartier Bacon and Eggs without even hearing about the musli. One (poached) egg was very hard boiled. The other, a perfectly poached, tasty egg. The bacon didn’t taste like bacon as much as it tasted like the tomato beans. I don’t know what the green stuff was. It was all tasty enough for my hungry stomach, though only the (one) perfectly poached egg stood out.

It came with their generic yogurt, juice, a peice of multigrain bread and a Rhubard pastry. The pastry was amazing, like candied rhubarb encased in a croissant.

Morning Tea was coffee, juice, water and some soft, creamy-centre raisin biscuits. There was only 4 of us in business class, and one of the flight attendants placed all the remaining (Unallocated) bicuits into a box and offered it to the couple in front of me, as they had mentioned they were visiting family for Christmas. I thought this was a sweet gesture and the couple sounded pleased with the afternoon snack they could take to their family.

An hour later the same attendant came around with bags of white and dark chocolate bullets, and small bottles of water for us all to “take with us”.

The service was great, and the FAs were all smiles and service. Once they could see how I was fighting to stay awake and work, they made sure my coffee cup never dipped below halfway.

For a super packed Christmas Eve flight, business felt very empty, and the FAs were very attentive and warm to us in business.

Unfortunately that was followed by the worst J menu I’ve had on a trans-Tasman flight. MEL-AKL 12:15 flight. Utterly uninspiring and the food matched. Plus no pre-lunch drink offered.

The most pathetic J meal I recall, on any airline. I thought the small plate was small, until I had the main. Teaspoon alongside gives an indication. And the spinach doesn’t even fill one tablespoon. Meat was over cooked, difficult to cut and chewy. For the first time ever I put the plate aside.

While I didn’t press the call button, the CSM (I think her name was Bonnie) happened by and saw I’d moved the plate. Told her what I thought of the meal. She agreed it looked very poor, promised to take a photo and provide my feedback. Offered me another main if available.

No choices left but she did bring me the poached chicken. Huge plate but not surprisingly had zero taste.

Cheese and embarrassing ice cream stick both provided without asking:

Bonnie apologised again as we were descending. She was fine. Rest of the crew were pretty average. All up a very disappointing experience.

Looking at the menu you posted, l would have ordered the same. And how disappointed l would have been as well.

QF - nickel-and-diming in J.

Best to try to get a feed in the lounge if you have time.

I also haven't flown J much but it looks like (from recent posts) QF offers a starter that is pretty much identical as the main (with 1 or 2 more ingredients) - eg tomato soup (entree) or big bowl of tomato soup with almond/romesco/croutons (main) or laksa broth (entree) or big bowl of Laksa with noodles/prawns/chicken (main). Looks like a bigger menu than it actually is...

You're right it's inconsistent. I posted that lamb meal for a recent J flight and it was ok, just one bit of meat with gristle.

27 Dec BNE > PER in J, dinner... I forgot to take a photo of the menu... I had zucchini soup and then lamb ragu. Both were delicious. If only I hadn't stuffed my face in the lounge beforehand, I would have enjoyed it more :(

Are you actually stating that the photo of the 'beef' main truly represents the meal is as it was presented to you? Completely untouched?

It looks like the rejected leftovers from another passenger and less appetising than 90% of the Y meals I have ever received....

Yes, completely untouched. The 2nd pic I put the spinach on the tablespoon but again hadn’t actually consumed any of it.

Should have taken a pic after I’d cut into the meat. But I think it’s obvious from the melted butter that the whole thing was over cooked.

Bonnie said the serving was how the meals arrived. Well, if so, why not forewarn pax that it was going to be sh*te?

QF605 BNE/MEL this morning (17/1)

After just reading the posts since 24 Dec, I’m going to add my voice to the other members expressing their displeasure with the current state of J meals.

Case in point, my meal this morning. Fried eggs with tomato and spicy sausage. 3 small pieces of chorizo sliced on an angle were hiding underneath the eggs, buried in the tomato.

Now everybody here should be screaming “is that the best you can do with plating?” Even me, a cursory cook when it comes to the culinary arts, would put the eggs on one side with the chorizo as a barrier to the tomato, or something similar. The consistency of the tomato was akin to a salsa without much flavour. 3 pieces of chorizo was hardly sufficient protein.

The best part of the meal was the yogurt (blueberry) and muffin (cranberry & pipita seeds). Those and the cup of tea that was replenished.

I also passed on my concerns to Lisa (CSM).

I have a Question about 787 longhaul Business meal service. I flew QF50 SFO to MEL recently. It was my first QF 787 flight. For dinner service the menu was quite extensive of main plates and it showed a salad and dessert and Petit Fors.
I get the main plate and bread. But no salad. Niel Perry's bowl of green leaves have been synonymous with QF for years. So after I while I asked about the salad. and he offered to get me one - he said they don't serve them by default. So I got salid and offered desert. Then after a while I called for coffee - no after meal drink service but anything was available for the asking. No Petit Fors with or after coffee - though I could have asked I guess.
I notice the whole service was done without trolley - which I like I think.
My question is whether this was just a single flight abberation or whether the service style has changed for 787 flights? - everything for the asking.

It's a "supper flight" ...

With that it is generally the case that the crew have decided on the minimum possible pro-active service in order to get PAX to sleep as soon as possible. This is generally to aid the crew in recovering from their exhausting Californian layover.

I tend to be a QF fan boi but the menu and meals and photos kermatu posted for his J flight MEL-AKL are appalling.
I haven't flown that route for 3 years or so, but remember meals being adequate and tasty. It seems you can often get better meals in J domestically.
It is after all an international flight.
I would really not regard a big bowl of soup or a cheese plate as an adequate main.
As for the steak; too small and over cooked. Chicken looks better but totally bland.
I trust Qantas will eventually get the message from passengers or crew.
