Qantas Cabin Baggage Survey Results Email

In regards to the somewhat new hand luggage piece and weight enforcement, there was a survey I received a couple of months back asking for my thoughts. I think I indicated I wasn't too happy with the not very consistent enforcement of rules around weight of bags, and that checked in baggage needed a guaranteed arrival time at the belt in order for me to use it more.

Today I received the following summary response.

Thank you for recently completing the Qantas Cabin Baggage survey.

We’d like to share back some of the findings that you told us:

• The majority of our customers want to travel with cabin baggage
• Customers would like to see more enforcement of the policy to help make the boarding process faster and to help get you away on time
• We also heard that improvements could be made on our speed of bags to belt once you have arrived - restoring trust in this system will help to encourage checking in your bags
• The 1 up, 1 down signage and process at the airports is seen as a positive step in helping improve your experience, with the signage sending a clear and easy to understand message
• Lastly, providing free check-in of bags at the gate for those that don't fit in the cabin is seen as helpful

We thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback, it is extremely valuable in helping us improve experiences for our customers.

Do you mean their instructions to put one carry-on bag above in the overhead locker and one under the seat in front of you?

It's a campaign they've been running at certain ports to educate passengers to place the large bag in the overhead and the smaller bag under the seat. I've seen it on screens a couple of times now when passing through SYD.

I disagree. The result they wanted was

"Our customers told us that they wanted us to charge for bags brought into the cabin, to discourage too many being brought on board."

(There was a story on more airlines doing this recently but I can't find it now.)

The airlines charging for carry-on in the name of ‘more choice’ for passengers​

Late last year United introduced a $55 fee for every item of carry-on such as a wheelie bag, backpack or laptop bag, with domestic travellers permitted only a small personal item capable of fitting under the seat in front.

Now Air Canada has followed suit, slapping a $39 fee on carry-on such as small suitcases and weekenders, with passengers restricted to a belt bag, satchel or handbag.

The fee applies on flights within North and Central America and the Caribbean.

As long as it doesn’t descend into the uncivilised chaos of DL and UA in the states, where your one small bag has to block your leg room, even when you don’t have a large bag.

i just put both bags up I thought that was normal ? Or sometimes check in my carry on bag with my other suitcases .
