You can have 10kg + 4kg (14kg total) + personal item? The rules just say "14kg total (each piece must not exceed 10kg)", so why couldn't you have a 10kg bag in the overhead?
Actually no they do not
just say that at all, your selective screen shot quote ignored the pesky
or so how about we look at the whole picture:
One Up One Down - Notice where it says
smaller bag or personal item under seat.
And where the Carry-on allowance quite clearly says to choose
one option :
So if you have a standard 56cm up to 10kg wheelie you cant also have another small size 4kg small piece and a personal item.
Its either:
- 1 larger (no longer than 56cm) bag up to 10kg in overhead + personal item (under seat) or
- 2 smaller size bags (both of which have to be under 48cm in length) weighing up to 14kgs total (with one placed overhead, one under seat) + personal item (but only if it fits under the seat with the second smaller bag).
Yes there are other combos for garment bag, but no combination where you can have a bag of 10kg and still have another 4kg bag + personal item.
Details are important.
Yes, I get that you wouldn't be able to take three pieces with your proposal.
That wasn't a proposal but a comment they need to better consolidate/clarify the existing rules given some people including yourself choose to ignore the interplay between the now enforced One up and One down signage and the ORs in the size/piece pictorial.
Would it be fairer to give everyone the same total weight limit irrespective of which combination of carry-on pieces they choose? Yes. But current policy is unfair currently if you go for an "up top" item over 48cm in length and/or over 10kgs; then you lose that extra 4kg except vis personal item.
Should there be a weight and size limit on personal item? Yes i think so.
Should Qantas make domestic and international carry-on allowances consistent? IMO Yes, would remove confusion and if anything you are more likley to need the extra weight internationally than on a domestic trip.
Could Qantas increase the carry-on weight allowance without increasing the size limitations? Yes, but until they do everyone should comply with current policy.
