I was one of the last in line boarding a Syd-Perth flight last week and observed a conversation between a passenger and the gate crew.

Passenger had requested a boarding pass reprint and had an app open on his ipad where he had selected a new seat(front of plane 2 spots back from business class). (I could see the seat images on the screen of the ipad)

gate crew on the computer were a bit unsure what was going on with the seat change and the passenger said it was an app only available to cabin managers and had changed his seat via the app.

i assume this is one of the staff perks when flying private ? Can they also move themselves to business ?

Can’t say as to the specifics as to what’s going on, but I do see the iPads often when flying upfront.

On my CBR-SYD flight, the CM had to charge her tablet using my seat power, and showed me the screen, which had the seat map, who’s sitting there, as well as status and gender (they had symbols occupying the seats). Weirdly enough, a J passenger across the aisle on the same flight had a similar tablet when I glanced over, probably also QF staff.

Travelling on staff travel (not signed on) they can't just move themselves to business, they have to book and have a spare seat (usually stealing my shadow at the last second) and pay a little bit more than their economy discount amount (unless paxing while signed on).

Not sure about being able to move themselves, sorry.

I do know that they keep a little bit of info on your QFF profile that is accessed from that 'CSM' app that other staff have written and isn't view-able by you. Things like drink preferences, when you've been given a P1 card, etc.

I am also pretty sure that all flight attendants are able to access that info, or at least all FA's on the bug bashers that don't have a CSM.
