Brother and his wife flew SYD-ZQN today on QF and luggage didn’t arrive. He isn’t a seasoned traveller so when I spoke to him yesterday I warned him about the problems and said it’s always a good idea anyway to pack spare clothes in carry on. He said it’s currently 0 degrees in Queenstown and snowing/drizzling. According to him it seemed like about half the flight didn’t receive their luggage and QF couldn’t tell them when it would arrive.
You should remind them that both Australia and New Zealand are signatories of the Montreal Convention of airport transport which has a provision stating that airlines must compensate travellers for items they purchase when their luggage goes missing, and that after 21 days the airline must pay the traveller $2200 AUD should they not locate the baggage within 21 days.

Worth noting that it's not quite $2200 cash in hand, but instead up to $2200 for the value of the bag plus it's contents. However Qantas does state that things of "special value" (read cash, jewellery etc), electronics etc are not included in this value (this exclusion idea has been previously called illegal on flyertalk).

Does Easter 2022 ring any bells ... :(
In fairness, I was around Sydney Airport during the Easter crunch. Yes it was busy but you know what, all hands were on deck. I even heard from a credible source that even Uncle Alan handled my bag that day! 🤣

Probably explains why he said there were "not match fit" travellers around after handling the weight of your baggage 🤣.

I am avoiding any bag checking at the moment, in fact the next few flights I have opted for JQ and gone for the 14kg carry on which the fee was a touch cheaper vs the checked bag.

Also avoiding peak periods!

Yes but JétStar is not the same as Qantas. They are two completely separate companies with their own policies, procedures, workers and call centres. I hardly doubt anyone on this forum has had to wait on hold for many hours only to be connected to an agent unhelpful and unknowledgeable agent when interacting with JétStar. The same cannot be said for Qantas.

So today is day 3 in Queenstown and no luggage still and they can’t tell him where it is. Bit warmer the last day or two and got to 9 degrees today!
