Qantas cancelled flight through their ticketing error: what to do...

Though the journalist doesn't seem to understand the way status works with the airline: "... has been flying with the Australian airline since the late 1980s, making him a gold member."

How long you have been flying with the airline is not what determines status. It's how much you have flown, SC earn etc.

You could get to Gold on one trip, but on the other hand you could have flown with QANTAS for much longer than since the late 1980s and still never have risen above Bronze status.

Little confused by the story, as I'm not familiar with Bentoville (is that one of those model Japanese cities in the US?)

Looks to be a place you would go to only have a *very* reason. UA & DL would have got him there.
That's Bentonville, not Bentoville as mentioned in the article.

As to why you would fly to Bentonville, Arkansas on business, let's see Wal-Mart is headquartered there. For those unfamiliar with North America, Walmart is like Target here in Australia except things are a lot cheaper and they have way more selection of items than your typical Walmart or K-Mart. For instance you can pick up motor oil and wiper blades with your groceries.
